Description

Schäfer-Fröhlich Stromberg GG 2022 in magnum format is a razor-sharp, mineral-driven dry Riesling from one of the Nahe’s most dramatic vineyards. Sourced from the estate’s steepest, rockiest and most extreme site, this Grosses Gewächs captures the tension, energy and salinity that have made Schäfer-Fröhlich a benchmark in Germany. Old vines rooted deep in volcanic bedrock give the wine an almost electric precision, wrapped in understated elegance.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2022 Stromberg GG is pale straw with a greenish shimmer, signaling youth, vibrancy and intensity. The nose is initially a touch reductive, slowly unfolding to reveal crisp green apple, delicate apple blossom, cool herbal nuances and a fine, stony smokiness that speaks clearly of its volcanic origin. On the palate, this is bone dry, focused and linear, with a striking interplay of citrus and green apple fruit, flinty minerality and racy, finely etched acidity. The wine feels driven, taut and incredibly energetic, with a mouthwatering line of salt and stone running through the finish. Despite its power, the texture is refined and almost weightless, carried by pure tension and brightness. Still very young, this 2022 has excellent aging potential: expect it to develop more complexity, depth and harmony over 10–15 years or longer in magnum, revealing layers of spice, dried citrus peel and smoky mineral notes over time.

Production
The Stromberg vineyard in Bockenau is one of the Nahe’s most extreme terroirs: a steep, rocky slope of volcanic origin, with poor, stony soils that force the vines to dig deep. Here, many of the Riesling vines are up to 80–100 years old, with a high proportion of very old, low-yielding plants that concentrate flavor, minerality and acidity. Schäfer-Fröhlich works these sites by hand due to the steepness, with meticulous selection of perfectly ripe, healthy grapes at harvest. In the cellar, the Grosses Gewächs wines are treated with a gentle, minimalist touch: carefully pressed, fermented with native or carefully selected yeasts, and matured on the lees in stainless steel and/or large traditional vessels to preserve clarity, tension and a precise expression of the volcanic Stromberg terroir.

Food & Serving
This is an outstanding food wine that shines with refined, subtly rich cuisine. Pair it with oysters, scallops, turbot, or other fine white fish; sushi and sashimi; or delicately prepared shellfish with citrus and herbs. It also works beautifully with veal, refined poultry dishes, or vegetable-focused plates such as asparagus, fennel, or lightly creamy risottos. Serve well chilled but not icy, ideally around 9–11 °C (48–52 °F) to allow the aromatics and minerality to unfold. In magnum and at this young stage, a gentle decant of 30–60 minutes can help the reduction blow off and reveal more floral and stone-driven complexity.

Producer
Schäfer-Fröhlich is one of the leading estates in the Nahe and among the most respected Riesling producers in Germany. Based in Bockenau, the family-run winery has built its reputation on steep, challenging vineyards such as Felseneck and Stromberg, where old vines and poor, rocky soils give wines of remarkable tension and precision. Under the guidance of Tim Fröhlich, the estate has earned widespread acclaim and top ratings from international critics for its expressive, terroir-driven dry Rieslings, especially its Grosses Gewächs bottlings. Today, Schäfer-Fröhlich stands as a reference point for modern, mineral, ageworthy Riesling that captures the full character of the Nahe’s varied and dramatic landscapes.
