Description

Schäfer-Fröhlich Stromberg GG 2020 in magnum format is a benchmark dry Riesling from one of Nahe’s most revered steep sites. Laser-bright, deeply mineral and almost weightless in its precision, it captures the cool, northern expression of the vintage with stunning clarity. Bottled in 1.5L, this Große Gewächs not only showcases a top German terroir but also promises an even more graceful evolution over time.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2020 Stromberg GG is remarkably pale and luminous, with a silvery-green shimmer that underlines its youth and freshness. The nose is cool and high-toned, showing crushed slate, wet stone and a salty sea-breeze character, wrapped around notes of lime zest, white grapefruit, green apple skin and hints of white flowers and herbs. There’s a quiet intensity here, more about rock and air than overt fruit. On the palate, the wine is full yet effortlessly refined, with a crystalline, almost razor-like acidity driving through the mid-palate. Citrus and stone-fruit notes are tightly woven with smoky, volcanic minerality and a subtle phenolic grip that reads almost like fine tannin, giving structure and length. It is dry, energetic and intensely savory, with a long, salty, mouthwatering finish that seems to grow in power with each sip. In magnum, the aging potential is excellent: expect 10–15 years at a minimum, with peak complexity likely emerging over the next decade as the fruit deepens and the mineral core becomes even more expressive.

Production
Sourced from the steep, stony Stromberg site in the Nahe, this Riesling grows on poor, weathered volcanic porphyry soils that naturally restrict yields and concentrate flavor. The cool, breezy exposition preserves acidity and gives the wine its distinctive, almost northern profile despite the relatively sunny climate. Schäfer-Fröhlich harvests by hand, often through multiple selective passes, to pick only perfectly ripe and healthy Riesling bunches at ideal ripeness for a dry GG. In the cellar, the grapes are gently pressed, with a slow, controlled fermentation—typically with ambient yeasts—largely in stainless steel and/or traditional large casks, allowing the terroir to shine without heavy oak influence. Extended lees contact builds texture and finesse while maintaining the wine’s signature precision and tension.

Food & Serving
This is a gastronomic dry Riesling that pairs brilliantly with refined, mineral-driven cuisine. Think delicate seafood such as oysters, scallops, turbot or trout, sushi and sashimi, or simply prepared shellfish with citrus and herbs. It also works beautifully with lightly spiced Asian dishes, fine vegetable dishes, asparagus, and poultry or veal in light, creamy or citrus-based sauces. Serve at 9–11°C to highlight its purity and tension; for young bottles—especially in magnum—decanting for 45–90 minutes can help the wine open up aromatically and soften the initial edge of its stony grip.

Producer
Schäfer-Fröhlich is one of the flagship estates of the Nahe and a reference point for modern German Riesling. Based in Bockenau, the family has been growing vines for generations, but it is under Tim Fröhlich that the estate has risen to the very top of the German wine hierarchy, becoming a member of the prestigious VDP and earning top scores from leading critics year after year. The domaine is known for its intensely mineral, terroir-driven Rieslings sourced from steep, rocky sites such as Felseneck, Halenberg and Stromberg, all farmed with meticulous care. Today, Schäfer-Fröhlich is widely regarded as one of the most exciting producers in Germany, producing dry GGs that are celebrated for their precision, depth and ageworthiness.
