Description

Schäfer-Fröhlich Stromberg GG 2018 in the rare 3L double magnum format is a powerful, dry Riesling that captures the dramatic volcanic slopes of the Nahe in every sip. This Grosses Gewächs (GG) combines crystalline precision with impressive depth, making it a standout choice for collectors and lovers of mineral-driven German Riesling. The large-format bottling further enhances its aging potential and makes it ideal for the table or special celebrations.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2018 Stromberg GG shows a bright, pale lemon color with youthful green reflections that hint at its freshness and longevity. The nose is intense yet finely etched: crushed slate and volcanic rock, smoky mineral notes, and a core of perfectly ripe Riesling fruit—think lime, white peach, green apple and a whisper of herbal spice. On the palate, the wine is mouth-filling and concentrated, yet poised and remarkably precise. A silky, almost crystalline texture carries layers of citrus, stone fruit and subtle florals, wrapped around a vibrant, stony backbone. The structure is tight and linear, with racy acidity balancing the ripeness of the 2018 vintage and leading into a long, saline and persistently mineral finish. In this 3L format, the wine is built for the long haul: it is already impressive, but will benefit from further cellaring. Expect a drinking window easily extending 10–20 years from vintage, with the double magnum slowing evolution and preserving freshness.

Production
Sourced from the steep Stromberg vineyard in the Nahe, this Grosses Gewächs comes from old vines rooted in poor, weathered volcanic soils that naturally limit yields and intensify mineral expression. The cool, wind-exposed site and its rocky subsoil give the wine its tension, smokiness and saline edge. Grapes are typically hand-harvested in multiple passes to ensure optimal ripeness and perfect fruit selection. In the cellar, Schäfer-Fröhlich works with a gentle, minimalist approach: careful pressing, spontaneous fermentation with indigenous yeasts, and élevage on fine lees in stainless steel and/or large traditional barrels, allowing terroir and vintage character to shine without overt oak influence.

Food & Serving
This is a serious gastronomic Riesling that shines alongside refined, flavorful cuisine. Pair it with dishes such as turbot or cod with beurre blanc, scallops, poached lobster, sushi and sashimi, or roasted poultry with lemon and herbs. It also works beautifully with fine veal, pork tenderloin, or vegetable-driven dishes featuring asparagus, fennel, or root vegetables, as well as moderately spicy Asian cuisine where acidity and minerality can cut through richness. Serve at around 9–11°C; if opened young, a short decant of 30–60 minutes in a carafe will help the wine unfold its full aromatic spectrum, especially from the 3L bottle.

Producer
Schäfer-Fröhlich is one of the leading estates of the Nahe and among the top addresses for dry Riesling in Germany. Based in Bockenau, the family-run winery has steadily risen to prominence under Tim Fröhlich, whose intense focus on terroir, low yields and precision in the cellar has earned international acclaim. The estate’s Grosses Gewächs bottlings from sites like Stromberg, Felseneck and Halenberg are considered benchmarks for mineral-driven, ageworthy Riesling. Today, Schäfer-Fröhlich plays a key role in defining the modern, dry style of German Riesling, consistently receiving top ratings and recognition from major wine critics and guides.
