Description

Schäfer-Fröhlich Frühlingsplätzchen GG 2022 is a crystalline, dry German Riesling from one of the Nahe’s most revered steep-slope vineyards. Classified as *Grosses Gewächs* (GG), it represents the very top tier of dry wines from this estate, combining precision, depth and minerality in equal measure. This is a wine for enthusiasts who appreciate razor-sharp definition, cool-climate elegance and true site expression in their Riesling.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the Frühlingsplätzchen GG 2022 shows a pale, luminous lemon colour with green reflections, hinting at its youth and freshness. The nose is intensely detailed and focused, with aromas of white peach, lime zest and green apple layered over notes of white flowers, crushed slate, flint and a delicate herbal lift reminiscent of lemon balm. On the palate, this is taut, racy and finely etched, with vibrant citrus and stone-fruit flavours wrapped around a core of salty, stony minerality. The fruit is pure and precise rather than opulent, carried by electric acidity and a firm, linear structure. Subtle hints of grapefruit pith, wet stone and a touch of smoke linger on a long, mouth-watering finish. Still youthful and tightly wound, the 2022 has excellent aging potential; with 8–15 years in bottle it will gain in texture, complexity and aromatic depth, moving towards more ripe stone fruit, honeyed notes and deeper minerality while retaining its freshness.

Production
The Frühlingsplätzchen vineyard is a steep, south- to southeast-facing site in the Nahe, known for its red slate and sandstone soils that give Riesling a particularly vibrant, finely chiselled character. Schäfer-Fröhlich works these demanding slopes largely by hand, ensuring meticulous selection of perfectly ripe, healthy grapes at harvest. The Riesling for this Grosses Gewächs is picked parcel by parcel to capture optimal ripeness and freshness, then pressed gently and fermented with predominantly natural yeasts in stainless steel and large neutral vessels. Extended time on the fine lees helps build texture and complexity while preserving the wine’s striking clarity and mineral expression, resulting in a GG that is both concentrated and beautifully precise.

Food & Serving
This Frühlingsplätzchen GG 2022 is a superb partner for refined seafood and delicate yet flavourful dishes: think oysters, scallop crudo, sashimi, ceviche, poached turbot, grilled sea bass, citrus-marinated prawns, or fine vegetable dishes such as asparagus, artichoke and fennel. It also works beautifully with light, aromatic Asian cuisine, sushi and lightly spiced dishes where freshness and acidity are key. Serve at around 8–10°C to emphasise its precision and mineral tension; as it warms slightly in the glass, the fruit and floral notes will expand. Decanting for 30–60 minutes in its youth can help the wine open up aromatically, especially if enjoyed within the first few years after release.

Producer
Schäfer-Fröhlich is one of the star estates of the Nahe and a leading name in modern German Riesling. Based in Bockenau, the family has been growing grapes for generations, but under the direction of Tim Fröhlich the winery has risen to the very top of the German quality hierarchy, becoming a benchmark member of the VDP (Germany’s top growers’ association). With holdings in some of the region’s greatest sites—such as Felseneck, Frühlingsplätzchen and Halenberg—the estate is renowned for intensely mineral, tightly structured Rieslings that age brilliantly. Consistently high scores from international critics and a reputation for precision, purity and terroir expression have cemented Schäfer-Fröhlich’s status as one of the most sought-after producers in the Nahe and beyond.
