Description

Schäfer-Fröhlich Felseneck GG 2022 is a razor-sharp, bone-dry Riesling from one of the Nahe’s most revered grand cru vineyards: Bockenauer Felseneck. Crafted from remarkably old vines (around 60–65 years), it captures the essence of steep, rocky slopes in a wine that feels both weightless and deeply intense. This is Grosses Gewächs at its most precise and mineral-driven, built for those who love purity, tension and focus in their Riesling.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2022 Felseneck GG shows a pale, shimmering lemon hue with green reflections, already hinting at its youth and vibrancy. The nose is strikingly pure and focused: an interplay of ripe yet vibrant citrus—think lemon zest and lime peel—layered with exotic hints of pineapple and passion fruit, all wrapped in a strong mineral frame that recalls wet stone, crushed rock and sea spray. There’s a cool, almost alpine quality to the aromatics, with subtle herbal and floral nuances emerging as it opens. On the palate, the wine is feather-light yet immensely concentrated, with a crystalline, laser-like line of acidity carrying citrus, green apple and stone-fruit notes over a core of salty, stony minerality. The structure is knasttør (bone-dry), uncompromising and linear, but never harsh, giving the impression of citrus-scented air passing over cool rock. The finish is very long, saline and precise, with a subtle grip and a lingering echo of lemon, smoke and stone. While already thrilling in its youth, this Felseneck GG has excellent aging potential; expect it to evolve beautifully over 10–20 years, gaining complexity, depth and texture while retaining its mineral backbone.

Production
Bockenauer Felseneck is one of the Nahe’s most dramatic sites: steep, terraced slopes with poor, stony soils dominated by slate, quartz and volcanic rock that force the vines to dig deep, resulting in tiny yields and intensely mineral wines. The vines here are among Schäfer-Fröhlich’s oldest, at around 60–65 years of age, contributing natural concentration and complexity. Harvest is carried out by hand in multiple passes to ensure only perfectly ripe, healthy Riesling grapes are selected, preserving acidity and aromatic precision. In the cellar, Tim Fröhlich works with a gentle, minimalist approach—careful pressing, spontaneous fermentation with natural yeasts, and élevage in stainless steel and/or large neutral oak—allowing the terroir of Felseneck to shine without masking it with overt oak or residual sweetness.

Food & Serving
This bone-dry, mineral Riesling is a superb partner for refined, precise cuisine. It pairs beautifully with delicately prepared seafood—think oysters, scallop crudo, ceviche, sushi and sashimi—as well as grilled or poached white fish, shellfish, and dishes featuring citrus, herbs and light cream sauces. It also excels with subtly spiced Asian dishes, high-quality sashimi, and vegetable-based plates such as asparagus, fennel or artichoke, where its clarity and acidity cut through and refresh. Serve well-chilled, around 8–10°C (46–50°F). Young bottles benefit from a brief decant of 30–60 minutes to allow the aromatics to unfurl and the mineral core to soften slightly; older vintages can be served directly from the bottle, with careful pouring.

Producer
Schäfer-Fröhlich is one of Germany’s most acclaimed Riesling producers and a modern benchmark for the Nahe region. A family estate based in Bockenau, it has been propelled to the top tier of German wine under the dynamic leadership of Tim Fröhlich, who has earned a reputation for carving out intensely mineral, precision-driven dry Rieslings from some of the region’s steepest and stoniest sites. The winery’s holdings in grand cru vineyards such as Bockenauer Felseneck are particularly prized, and their Grosses Gewächs bottlings regularly receive top scores and critical acclaim. Schäfer-Fröhlich has played a major role in elevating the Nahe’s profile on the world stage, demonstrating that the region can produce white wines to rival the very best in Germany and beyond.
