Description
Bottled in an impressive 6L Imperial, Schäfer-Fröhlich Felseneck GG 2020 is a benchmark dry Riesling from one of the Nahe’s most thrilling vineyards. Laser-focused, cool and intensely mineral, it captures the essence of blue slate and steep, windswept slopes in every glass. This Grosses Gewächs (GG) is a profound expression of Tim Fröhlich’s signature style: ultra-precise, saline and built for long-term cellaring.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2020 Felseneck GG shows a pale, luminous straw color with green highlights that hint at its youth and energy. The nose is strikingly pure and cool-toned: freshly grated lemon zest and lemon oil over crushed blue slate, with notes of citrus leaf, green apple skin, white flowers and a subtle, creamy sur lie nuance underneath. There’s a distinct salty breeze impression, as if the vineyard were washed by distant sea air.
On the palate, the wine is razor-sharp yet elegant, with a taut, linear structure. Bright, mouthwatering acidity frames flavors of lime, lemon pith, crunchy stone fruit and a core of wet stone and flint. The texture is crystalline rather than opulent, with a long, vibrating finish that leaves impressions of citrus oil, smoke, and sea salt. Still tightly wound in its youth, this 2020 Felseneck GG clearly has the concentration and structure to evolve beautifully; it will reward a decade or more of careful cellaring, especially in this large-format bottle, where evolution is even slower and more graceful.
Production
The Felseneck vineyard is one of the Nahe’s great terroirs: steep, high-elevation slopes with poor, rocky blue slate and mixed stone soils that naturally limit yields and emphasize minerality. Cool nights and a relatively moderate climate preserve acidity and aromatic precision, giving wines that are as tensile as they are concentrated. Grapes for this Grosses Gewächs are typically harvested by hand in multiple passes to ensure optimal ripeness and pristine fruit, with rigorous selection in the vineyard. In the cellar, Schäfer-Fröhlich favors a minimalist approach: gentle pressing, spontaneous fermentation with indigenous yeasts, and élevage on the lees in traditional large German oak or neutral vessels, allowing the vineyard’s salty, flinty character to shine without overt oak influence.
Food & Serving
This is a gastronomic Riesling that excels at the table. Its acid spine and saline minerality make it a natural partner for refined seafood dishes—think turbot with beurre blanc, sashimi, oysters, scallops, or poached lobster. It also pairs beautifully with delicately spiced Asian cuisine, fine sashimi, poultry in light citrus or herb sauces, and fresh goat’s or soft-ripened cheeses. Serve well-chilled but not icy, ideally around 9–11°C (48–52°F). Given its concentration and youthful tension, decanting for at least 1–2 hours is recommended in its early years, especially from this 6L Imperial, to allow the wine’s layers and aromatics to fully unfold.
Producer
Schäfer-Fröhlich is one of the leading estates in Germany’s Nahe region, widely regarded as a modern standard-bearer for terroir-driven Riesling. Under the guidance of Tim Fröhlich, the winery has risen from a respected family domaine to the very top tier of German producers, with multiple Grosse Lage (Grand Cru) sites and a reputation for chiseled, slate-infused dry wines. The estate’s vineyards—many of them steep, stony and challenging to farm—are cultivated with meticulous care and low yields, producing wines that consistently earn top scores and critical acclaim. Felseneck is often cited as the jewel in the crown, and its Grosses Gewächs bottlings are considered among the most age-worthy and distinctive dry Rieslings in Germany.
