Description

Schäfer-Fröhlich Felsenberg GG 2022 in magnum showcases one of the Nahe’s most dramatic terroirs in a particularly pure, chiselled dry Riesling. Sourced from the steep, stony slopes of Schlossböckelheimer Felsenberg, this wine combines crystalline fruit with a striking, salty mineral backbone. Bottled in 1.5 L, it’s built for both grand tables and graceful long-term aging, offering an elevated expression of German Grosses Gewächs Riesling.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2022 Felsenberg GG is pale straw with green reflections, hinting at its youth and vibrancy. The nose is focused and refined: crisp green and yellow apple, crushed citrus leaves, grapefruit zest, and a subtle herbal lift, wrapped in a fine smoky and stony impression from the volcanic soils. There’s a sense of cool, wet rock and fern that underlines its origin, rather than any overt ripeness. On the palate, the wine is bone-dry, linear and intensely salty from the first sip, with a crackling acidity that frames flavors of lemon, lime, and grapefruit pith. As it opens, notes of crushed stone, flint, and a faint smokiness emerge, giving depth and tension rather than weight. The finish is long, precise and driven by grapefruit, citrus peel and a lingering saline echo. In magnum format, the 2022 has excellent aging potential: expect it to unfold over 10–15+ years, gaining texture, complexity and a more nuanced interplay of fruit and minerality while retaining its vibrant core.

Production
The Felsenberg GG comes from the steep, terraced slopes of Schlossböckelheim in the Nahe, a site famed for its rocky, volcanic soils that impart a distinctive smoky, mineral character to Riesling. Proximity to the river creates cool night-time humidity and morning moisture, conditions that demand meticulous vineyard work to avoid botrytis in these dry wines. Schäfer-Fröhlich harvests selectively by hand, often in multiple passes, to capture perfect physiological ripeness while preserving piercing acidity and avoiding any affected berries. In the cellar, the must is handled gently and fermented with great care—typically with a mix of stainless steel and large neutral vessels—so that spontaneous or slow fermentations can express the terroir without overt oak influence. The aim is precision, tension and transparency, allowing the volcanic origin and Grosses Gewächs quality level to speak clearly in the glass.

Food & Serving
This is a superb food wine that shines with refined, savory dishes: think grilled or poached white fish with citrus and herbs, scallops, ceviche, or oysters, as well as roast poultry, veal, or pork with light pan sauces. Its saline, citrus-driven profile also works beautifully with Asian-inspired cuisine—sushi, sashimi, lightly spiced Thai or Vietnamese dishes—and vegetable-focused plates such as asparagus, fennel, or dishes with fresh herbs. Serve at 8–10°C (46–50°F) to emphasize its tension and aromatics. In magnum and in its youth, a brief decant of 30–60 minutes is recommended to allow the smoky, stony nuances to emerge and the structure to knit together.

Producer
Schäfer-Fröhlich is one of the modern benchmarks of the Nahe, a family estate that has risen to the top tier of German wine over the past few decades under the direction of Tim Fröhlich. Based in Bockenau, the winery farms some of the region’s most revered steep sites, including Felsenberg, Halenberg and Felseneck, with a focus on Riesling that is both terroir-transparent and rigorously precise. Their Grosses Gewächs bottlings routinely receive top acclaim from international critics and are prized for their combination of intensity, razor-sharp structure and ageworthiness. Today, Schäfer-Fröhlich is considered a leading voice in expressing the cool, mineral, volcanic and slate-driven character that makes the Nahe one of Germany’s most exciting regions for premium dry Riesling.
