Description

Schäfer-Fröhlich Felsenberg GG 2021 in the impressive 3L double magnum format is a benchmark dry Riesling from one of the Nahe’s most iconic sites. This is a powerful yet supremely precise white, combining richness and depth with a razor‑sharp mineral backbone. In double magnum, it’s built not just for pleasure at the table, but for long, graceful aging and truly special occasions. Sourced from the steep, volcanic Felsenberg vineyard, this Grosses Gewächs (GG) showcases the terroir’s signature tension between ripe fruit and stony, smoky minerality. The 2021 vintage in Germany favoured purity, freshness and finesse, giving a wine that is both lush and structured, and already widely regarded as one of the standout Felsenberg bottlings of recent years.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, Felsenberg GG 2021 is pale to medium lemon with a faint green hue, hinting at both youth and vigor. The nose is strikingly pure yet complex: dark, flinty smokiness rises first, followed by notes of ripe yellow plum, citrus zest and white peach, intertwined with delicate herbal tones and a hint of crushed slate. With air, more spice and subtle floral nuances emerge, adding further layers to its mineral-driven bouquet. On the palate, the wine is full‑bodied yet incredibly precise, with a clean, fresh attack and a taut, linear core. Fine, almost tactile tannins give an extra dimension of structure, while the acidity is ripe, refined and beautifully integrated. Flavours of plum, stone fruit and citrus are wrapped in a dense, salty minerality that builds towards an intense, aromatic, crisp and wonderfully crunchy finish. The saline impression lingers for a long time, making each sip feel both invigorating and complete. This 2021 Felsenberg GG has excellent aging potential, particularly in 3L: expect it to evolve gracefully over 15–20+ years, gaining more complexity, smokiness and honeyed nuance while retaining its mineral spine.

Production
The Felsenberg vineyard is a steep, terraced slope in the Nahe, characterized by volcanic porphyry soils that give Schäfer‑Fröhlich’s Rieslings their signature dark, smoky minerality and pronounced salinity. Low yields and meticulous work in the vineyard ensure concentrated, perfectly ripe grapes, typically harvested by hand in multiple passes to capture optimal ripeness and purity. In the cellar, the must is handled with great care, often with gentle pressing and slow, temperature‑controlled fermentations—traditionally in stainless steel and large oak—allowing the terroir’s character to shine without overt winemaking influence. Extended lees contact adds texture and depth, while the wine is kept dry and focused to meet the stringent Grosses Gewächs standards.

Food & Serving
This is a serious dry Riesling that pairs beautifully with refined, flavorful cuisine: think grilled or roasted turbot, halibut or cod, shellfish (especially scallops or lobster), as well as veal, guinea fowl or pork with light, aromatic sauces. It excels with dishes featuring herbs, citrus, ginger, or subtle spice, and has the structure to match richer preparations like butter-based sauces or poultry with truffle. Serve chilled but not icy, ideally around 10–12°C, to allow the aromatics and texture to unfold. Young bottles will benefit from decanting for 1–2 hours, particularly from the double magnum, to fully reveal the wine’s complexity and mineral depth.

Producer
Schäfer‑Fröhlich is one of Germany’s most acclaimed modern Riesling estates, based in the Nahe and led by Tim Fröhlich, who has elevated the winery to true cult status. Over the past two decades, the estate has become synonymous with precision, intensity and terroir‑driven wines, particularly from steep, rocky Grand Cru sites like Felsenberg, Stromberg and Halenberg. Their focus on low yields, meticulous handwork and a sensitive, minimalist approach in the cellar has earned them top scores and accolades from international critics, as well as a reputation as a leading voice in the renaissance of dry German Riesling. The Felsenberg GG stands among their flagship wines, regularly cited as one of the region’s finest expressions of volcanic terroir.
