Description
Schäfer-Fröhlich Felsenberg GG 2021 is a powerful, dry Riesling from the steep porphyry slopes of the Nahe, crafted by one of Germany’s most acclaimed estates. This Grosses Gewächs marries depth and precision, offering both generosity of fruit and razor-sharp definition. Its hallmark is a salty, flinty minerality that runs through the wine from first sip to the long, crystalline finish, making it a benchmark bottling from this iconic site.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2021 Felsenberg GG shows a pale to medium lemon hue with green reflections, signalling both youth and intensity. The nose is refined yet expressive, with a darker, smoky profile: crushed slate and flint, ripe yellow plum, citrus zest, delicate herbal notes and subtle spice. There’s a sense of cool, stony depth beneath the fruit that is very typical of Felsenberg.
On the palate, the wine is full-bodied for a dry Riesling, but stays impeccably clean and precise. The texture is firm yet polished, with fine, almost tactile tannins from the grape skins and a ripe, refined acidity that gives a beautiful, linear drive. Layers of stone fruit, citrus oil and herbal nuances unfold over a core of intense, salty minerality, leading into a long, aromatic, crisp and crunchy finish. Still tightly coiled in its youth, this 2021 has excellent aging potential and will gain further complexity and harmony over the next 10–15 years, and likely longer in a good cellar.
Production
The Felsenberg vineyard is a steep, terraced site in the Nahe, dominated by volcanic porphyry soils that impart the wine’s signature smoky, flinty character and high, saline tension. Vines are worked by hand due to the slope, with careful green harvesting and low yields to concentrate flavour. Grapes are picked by hand at optimal ripeness, sorted rigorously, and gently pressed. Fermentation typically proceeds with indigenous yeasts in stainless steel and traditional large German oak (Stück or Doppelstück) to preserve purity while adding textural finesse. Extended lees contact enhances mouthfeel and complexity, resulting in a wine that captures both the intensity of the site and the clarity of the vintage.
Food & Serving
This Felsenberg GG is an outstanding partner for refined cuisine: think grilled or poached turbot, scallops, langoustines, or oysters with a richer garnish, as well as sushi, sashimi and fine tempura. It also shines with white asparagus, herb‑roasted chicken, veal schnitzel, and subtly spiced Asian dishes such as ginger‑soy glazed fish or lightly spiced Thai dishes. Serve at 9–11°C to highlight its precision and minerality. In its youth, a brief decant of 30–60 minutes can help the wine open up its flinty bouquet and soften the structure; with some bottle age, gentle aeration in the glass will be sufficient.
Producer
Schäfer-Fröhlich is one of the star estates of the Nahe and among the leading Riesling producers in Germany. Based in Bockenau, the family-run winery has steadily risen to prominence under Tim Fröhlich, who has gained a reputation as a meticulous ‘wine advocate’ for the region’s steep, rocky sites. The estate farms some of the Nahe’s most prized vineyards, including Felsenberg, Halenberg and Felseneck, and is renowned for wines that combine intensity, minerality and razor-sharp precision. Regularly receiving top scores from international critics and playing a key role in elevating the status of Nahe Riesling worldwide, Schäfer-Fröhlich is considered a benchmark producer for Grosses Gewächs wines of depth and longevity.
