Description
The Schäfer-Fröhlich Felsenberg GG 2020 in magnum format is a striking, dry Riesling from one of the Nahe’s most dramatic grand cru vineyards. Intensely mineral, tightly wound and perfumed with spice, it showcases the precision and power that have made Schäfer-Fröhlich a benchmark estate in Germany. Bottled in 1.5 L, this Grosses Gewächs is built for both serious enjoyment now and extended cellaring. From the steep, rocky Felsenberg site, this wine marries a peppery, reductive lift with ripe, complex fruit and refined phenolic structure. As part of the VDP Grosses Gewächs classification, it stands among the top dry Rieslings of Germany and reflects the modern renaissance of the Nahe region, led in large part by Tim Fröhlich’s relentless pursuit of quality.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the Felsenberg GG 2020 shows a pale straw to light lemon hue with green highlights, hinting at both its youth and concentration. The nose opens with a distinctive, flinty reduction and a peppery, smoky edge, gradually revealing layers of ripe citrus, candied orange peel, stone fruit and a hint of crushed herbs. With air, more nuance emerges: notes of white flowers, wet stone and a subtle savory spice.
On the palate, this is full of tension and finesse. It feels both supple and tightly coiled, with a dense, finely knit core of citrus and orchard fruit wrapped around a spine of vibrant acidity. The phenolic grip is polished yet present, giving the wine structure and a tactile, almost chalky feel. All components—fruit, acidity, minerality and phenolics—are in striking balance, leading to a long, saline finish with lingering notes of candied citrus and spice. In magnum, the aging potential is excellent; stored well, this wine can evolve beautifully for 15–20 years or more, gaining complexity, honeyed depth and further integration of its mineral and spicy elements.
Production
The Felsenberg vineyard is one of the Nahe’s most celebrated sites, a steep, terraced slope characterized by volcanic porphyry and weathered stone that impart a smoky, spicy minerality to the Riesling. The vines dig deep into the poor, rocky soils, naturally restricting yields and concentrating flavor. Schäfer-Fröhlich farms their top sites with meticulous, largely manual work—hand-harvesting at optimal ripeness to capture both intensity and freshness. In the cellar, the grapes for this Grosses Gewächs are gently pressed, with careful settling of the must, and fermented with a combination of indigenous and selected yeasts at controlled temperatures. The wine is then raised on its fine lees, typically in stainless steel and large neutral oak, to build texture and complexity without masking the vineyard’s character, and finally bottled with minimal intervention to preserve purity and precision.
Food & Serving
This is a versatile, gastronomic dry Riesling that shines with refined, flavorful dishes. Think shellfish (especially scallops, prawns and lobster), grilled or roasted white fish, and delicately prepared poultry. Its spice and structure work beautifully with Asian-inspired cuisine—such as lightly spiced Thai or Vietnamese dishes, sushi and sashimi, or refined dishes with ginger, lemongrass and citrus. It also pairs well with veal, pork tenderloin and vegetable-based plates featuring fennel, asparagus or root vegetables. Serve at 9–11 °C (48–52 °F) to highlight both minerality and fruit. In its youth, decanting for 30–60 minutes is recommended to allow the reductive, peppery notes to unfold and the wine’s full aromatic spectrum to emerge, especially from magnum.
Producer
Schäfer-Fröhlich is one of the leading estates of the Nahe and a member of the prestigious VDP (Verband Deutscher Prädikatsweingüter). Under the direction of Tim Fröhlich, the winery has gained an international reputation for razor-sharp, intensely mineral Rieslings from top sites such as Felsenberg, Felseneck and Halenberg. The family has worked the vineyards for generations, but it is in the last few decades that the estate has become a reference point for modern, terroir-driven German wine. Consistently high scores from international critics, along with acclaim for their Grosses Gewächs bottlings, have cemented Schäfer-Fröhlich’s status as a standard-bearer for precision, tension and depth in dry Riesling from the Nahe.
