Description

Schäfer-Fröhlich Felsenberg GG 2020 in Doppelmagnum (3 L) is a monumental dry Riesling from one of the Nahe’s most dramatic vineyards. This is a wine that combines intense minerality with ripe, nuanced fruit and a signature smoky, peppery edge. Bottled in large format for extended aging, it’s a showpiece bottle for serious collectors and for the table on special occasions. As a VDP.GROSSES GEWÄCHS from the steep, stone-strewn Felsenberg site, this Riesling stands out for its tension between power and precision, offering both density and remarkable finesse. The 2020 vintage delivers a finely etched wine with candied citrus, spice and deeply woven structure, continuing the estate’s modern classic status in dry German Riesling. Rooted in a long Nahe tradition but crafted with a very contemporary sensibility, it’s a benchmark expression of volcanic terroir.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, Felsenberg GG 2020 shows a bright, pale lemon color with green highlights that hint at its youthful intensity and long life ahead. The nose opens with a peppery, slightly smoky and reductive character—a hallmark of Schäfer-Fröhlich—gradually revealing layers of ripe stone fruit, candied orange peel, crushed herbs, and a cool, stony minerality. With air, notes of grapefruit zest, lime oil and a subtle floral lift begin to emerge, adding both freshness and complexity. On the palate, the wine is at once full and supple, with a compact, tightly knit core. Ripe citrus and stone fruit are wrapped in dense, harmonious phenolic structure, giving it a tactile, almost silky grip rather than overt weight. The acidity is vibrant but beautifully integrated, driving the wine forward and accentuating its saline, mineral edge. All elements—fruit, spice, texture, acidity and minerality—are in near-perfect balance, each contributing without dominating. In Doppelmagnum, the aging potential is outstanding: expect 15–20+ years of evolution, with the reductive, peppery tones softening into more honeyed, smoky-mineral complexity over time.

Production
The Felsenberg vineyard is a steep, terraced slope above the Nahe River, dominated by weathered volcanic porphyry and rocky soils that store heat by day and radiate it by night. This harsh, stony terroir naturally limits yields and imparts the wine’s pronounced minerality and spice. Grapes for this Grosses Gewächs are meticulously hand-harvested at optimal ripeness, with strict selection in the vineyard to ensure only the healthiest, most concentrated berries are used. Fermentation typically proceeds with indigenous yeasts, allowing a slow, controlled vinification in stainless steel and/or large neutral oak, depending on the parcel, to preserve purity while building texture. Extended lees contact adds depth and a fine phenolic frame without masking the clarity of the site, resulting in a dry Riesling of both precision and impressive power.

Food & Serving
This Felsenberg GG 2020 is a versatile yet serious food wine, ideal for refined seafood and white meat dishes. Pair it with grilled or poached turbot, scallops, lobster with citrus butter, or roasted poultry with herb jus; its structure and minerality also make it superb with veal, pork tenderloin, or dishes featuring fennel, leek, or root vegetables. The wine’s peppery, candied orange nuances shine alongside modern Asian-inspired cuisine—think sashimi with yuzu, refined Thai, or lightly spiced dishes with ginger and lemongrass. Serve at 9–11°C (48–52°F) to highlight its tension and aromatic detail. Given its youth and structure, decanting for 1–2 hours is recommended, especially from Doppelmagnum, to allow the reductive notes to relax and the full aromatic spectrum to unfold.

Producer
Schäfer-Fröhlich is one of the leading estates of the Nahe and among the elite producers of dry Riesling in Germany. Based in Bockenau, the family has been growing grapes for generations, but it is under Tim Fröhlich’s direction that the estate has risen to international prominence. A member of the prestigious VDP, Schäfer-Fröhlich farms some of the region’s most prized steep sites, including Felsenberg, Halenberg, and Felseneck, each known for their distinctive expressions of slate and volcanic soils. The estate is celebrated for its focused, mineral-driven style and its use of judicious reduction to enhance complexity and longevity. Consistently high scores from leading critics and a strong presence on top restaurant lists worldwide have cemented Schäfer-Fröhlich’s reputation as a benchmark producer in the Nahe and a reference point for modern, terroir-expressive German Riesling.
