Description

Schäfer-Fröhlich Felsenberg GG 2019 is a benchmark dry Riesling from one of Nahe’s most revered crus, crafted by a producer at the very top of modern German winemaking. This Grosses Gewächs captures the wild, stony character of the Felsenberg site with precision, intensity and a thrilling, racy structure. Combining floral charm with striking mineral depth, it’s a wine that speaks clearly of place and promises an exciting evolution in the cellar.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the Felsenberg GG 2019 shows a luminous, pale straw color with green reflections, hinting at its youth and freshness. The nose is immediately expressive: floral notes of white blossom and acacia intertwine with spicy, terpenic nuances, citrus zest and crushed stone. Subtle hints of herbs and flint add complexity as the wine opens. On the palate, this dry Riesling is densely packed and almost tactile in its concentration, yet perfectly balanced. A subtle, gentle sweetness of ripe stone fruit underpins the core, while a striking, laser-like acidity drives the wine forward with energy and focus. The texture is mouth-coating and nearly chewy, with a powerful, tactile-mineral backbone that dominates the long, salty and stony finish. Already captivating, the 2019 has excellent aging potential; over the next 10–15 years (and beyond in good cellars), expect even greater integration, more nuanced complexity and an even more pronounced mineral signature.

Production
Sourced from the steep, terraced Felsenberg vineyard in the Nahe, this Grosses Gewächs grows on volcanic and weathered porphyry soils that lend the wine its signature smoky, spicy minerality and tension. The vines are worked meticulously, typically with low yields and a strong focus on hand work, including selective hand-harvesting at optimal ripeness to preserve both concentration and freshness. In the cellar, Schäfer-Fröhlich favors a gentle, minimalist approach: careful pressing of whole clusters, slow, temperature-controlled fermentation (often with ambient yeasts) and extended lees contact to build texture and depth, while blocking any overt oak influence so the purity of Riesling and the character of Felsenberg remain front and center.

Food & Serving
This Felsenberg GG 2019 is a superb partner for refined, aromatic cuisine: think sashimi and crudo, lightly spiced Asian dishes, grilled or poached shellfish, scallops, lobster, and delicate white fish with citrus or herb-based sauces. It also works beautifully with fine poultry, veal, or pork dishes, especially when accompanied by root vegetables, fennel, or subtly spiced preparations, as well as aged goat or semi-hard alpine cheeses. Serve at 9–11°C (48–52°F) to highlight its precision and aromatic complexity. Young bottles benefit from a brief decant of 30–60 minutes to allow the wine’s floral, spicy and mineral layers to unfurl fully.

Producer
Schäfer-Fröhlich is one of Germany’s most acclaimed Riesling producers and a true standard-bearer for the Nahe region. Under Tim Fröhlich’s leadership, the family estate has risen to star status, consistently earning top scores and critical praise for its crystalline, terroir-driven dry Rieslings. Working primarily with steep, stony grand cru vineyards such as Felsenberg, Bockenauer Felseneck and others, the domaine is renowned for its meticulous vineyard work, low yields and minimalist winemaking that lets each site speak clearly. Today, Schäfer-Fröhlich is widely regarded as a reference point in the Nahe and among the elite producers of Grosses Gewächs Rieslings in all of Germany.
