Description
Schäfer-Fröhlich Felsenberg GG 2018 in magnum format (1.5 L) is a powerful, dry Riesling that captures the drama of the steep volcanic slopes of the Nahe. Intensely aromatic yet finely etched, it combines ripe fruit richness with a strikingly flinty, mineral backbone. This Grosses Gewächs (“GG”) from the celebrated Felsenberg vineyard represents one of Germany’s most compelling expressions of dry Riesling and showcases the precision and energy that define modern Nahe winemaking.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2018 Felsenberg GG shows a bright, luminous straw-yellow hue with green reflections, hinting at both ripeness and freshness. The nose is deep and layered: concentrated ripe stone fruits and citrus are joined by stikkelsbær (gooseberry), cool herbal and vegetal nuances, and a distinct flinty, smoky minerality that reflects the volcanic origins of the site.
On the palate, the wine is dense and tightly structured yet remarkably poised. Fleshy, ripe Riesling fruit is wrapped around a core of intense, salty, almost tactile minerality, giving a mouthwatering, ‘salt-piquant’ character. It is both powerful and elegant, with excellent freshness, precision and a long, persistent finish marked by saline grip and youthful energy. Already impressive now, the structure, concentration and acidity suggest significant aging potential; in magnum especially, it should evolve beautifully over 10–20 years, gaining further complexity, harmony and tertiary notes of honey, spice and dried flowers.
Production
The Felsenberg vineyard in the Nahe is renowned for its steep, rocky slopes and volcanic soils, which impart a distinctive smoky, flinty minerality and natural tension to the Riesling. Schäfer-Fröhlich typically works with low yields and meticulous hand-harvesting, allowing only perfectly ripe, healthy grapes into this Grosses Gewächs cuvée. The fruit is carefully sorted and gently pressed, with a long, slow fermentation—often with indigenous yeasts—in stainless steel and/or large neutral oak, depending on the parcel and vintage. Extended lees contact adds texture and depth while preserving the wine’s purity, salinity and precise expression of terroir, resulting in a tightly woven, complex dry Riesling of notable intensity.
Food & Serving
This Felsenberg GG is a superb partner for refined, flavorful dishes—think grilled or pan-seared white fish, scallops, or langoustines, as well as Asian-influenced seafood with ginger, citrus and herbs. It also excels with fine poultry, veal in light jus, and vegetable-driven cuisine like asparagus, fennel, or dishes with fresh herbs. Rich cheeses such as aged goat cheese or harder Alpine styles also pair well with its salt-mineral backbone. Serve at around 9–11°C (48–52°F) to showcase both fruit and minerality. For current drinking, especially from magnum, decanting for 1–2 hours is recommended to allow the aromatics and structure to fully open.
Producer
Schäfer-Fröhlich is one of the leading estates of the Nahe and among Germany’s most acclaimed modern Riesling producers. Based in Bockenau, the family winery has steadily risen to prominence under the guidance of Tim Fröhlich, whose focus on rigorous vineyard work, low yields and precise, terroir-driven vinification has earned top ratings and international recognition. With holdings in some of the region’s greatest sites—such as Felsenberg, Felseneck and Halenberg—the estate is celebrated for its incisive, mineral-driven Rieslings that balance intensity with finesse. The Felsenberg GG is a flagship bottling that underscores Schäfer-Fröhlich’s reputation for extracting profound character from the Nahe’s volcanic and slate-rich soils.
