Description

Schäfer-Fröhlich Bockenauer Riesling Trocken Schiefergestein 2022 is a razor-sharp, slate-driven dry Riesling from one of Nahe’s most exciting producers. Sourced from 20–30-year-old vines in the famed Bockenauer Felseneck, it captures the filigree precision and cool, stony character that have made this site legendary. Expect a wine that is at once feather-light in feel and deeply expressive, wrapped in a resolutely dry, crystalline style.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2022 Schiefergestein shows a very pale lemon color with silvery highlights, hinting at its youthful energy and brisk acidity. The nose opens with a touch of reductive, slightly yeasty funk that quickly lifts to reveal a vivid world of citrus: pithy lemon peel, lime zest and hints of grapefruit, overlaid with crushed slate, wet stone and a whisper of white flowers. On the palate, the wine is knasttør (bone dry), taut and linear, with a strikingly pure, stony backbone. A fine, racy acidity drives flavors of pale lemon, green apple skin and lime, layered with smoky slate and a salty, mineral edge that lingers long on the finish. The texture is ultra-fine and almost weightless, yet the depth of flavor is impressive, creating a tension between delicacy and intensity. While already thrilling in its youth, this 2022 has the structure and acidity to age gracefully for 8–10 years, developing more complexity, subtle herbal notes and a touch of waxy, smoky richness over time.

Production
The Schiefergestein bottling comes from the light, meager slate soils of the steep Bockenauer Felseneck, whose poor, rocky terroir naturally limits yields and channels the vines’ energy into concentration and minerality rather than opulence. The 20–30-year-old Riesling vines are typically hand-harvested in small parcels to ensure optimal ripeness and selection on the steep slopes. In the cellar, Schäfer-Fröhlich favors a minimalist approach: gentle pressing, spontaneous fermentation with native yeasts and élevage in a combination of stainless steel and traditional large wooden casks, preserving the wine’s crystalline precision, tension and transparent expression of slate.

Food & Serving
This bone-dry, finely etched Riesling is a superb partner for delicately prepared seafood—think oysters, ceviche, scallop crudo, steamed mussels or simply grilled white fish with lemon and herbs. It also works beautifully with sushi, sashimi, fresh goat’s cheese, lightly spiced Asian dishes (especially citrusy or ginger-driven flavors) and vegetable dishes featuring asparagus, fennel or citrus. Serve well chilled at around 8–10°C to highlight its precision and minerality. A brief 15–30 minute decant, or simply giving it some air in the glass, can help any initial reduction blow off and allow the citrus and slate aromatics to fully unfold.

Producer
Schäfer-Fröhlich is a benchmark estate in Germany’s Nahe region, based in the village of Bockenau and led by winemaker Tim Fröhlich. Over the past two decades, the estate has risen to the top tier of German Riesling producers, known for its intensely mineral, tightly wound wines from steep, slate- and volcanic-soiled vineyards such as Bockenauer Felseneck. As a member of the VDP (Germany’s prestigious growers’ association), Schäfer-Fröhlich has played a key role in redefining the Nahe’s reputation, consistently earning top scores and international recognition for its Grosses Gewächs and top dry Rieslings. The estate’s philosophy centers on meticulous vineyard work, low yields and precise, low-intervention winemaking to capture the full, crystalline expression of its remarkable terroirs.
