Description
Scarpa Barolo Tettimorra 2021 is a classically styled Barolo from one of Piedmont’s most respected traditional producers. Crafted from 100% Nebbiolo grown in the Tettimorra vineyard, this wine combines precision, aromatic lift and serious structure in a vintage built for the cellar. It’s a Barolo that speaks clearly of place: elegant yet powerful, with the quiet confidence of old-school craftsmanship.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, Scarpa Barolo Tettimorra 2021 shows a luminous garnet core with brick-red highlights at the rim, already hinting at Nebbiolo’s signature evolution. The nose opens with pure, high-toned aromatics: crushed rose petals, violet, wild strawberry and red cherry layered over notes of tar, dried herbs, anise and subtle cedar from large cask aging.
On the palate, the wine is focused and linear in its youth, with bright red fruit—sour cherry, raspberry and red currant—wrapped in firm, chalky tannins. Classic Barolo notes of leather, tobacco leaf, orange peel and earthy spice unfold with air, supported by vibrant acidity that keeps everything fresh and lifted. The 2021 vintage shows excellent balance and tension, promising 12–20 years of graceful development, during which the tannins will soften and the savory, truffle and underbrush nuances will become more pronounced.
Production
The Tettimorra vineyard lies on hillside sites in the Barolo zone of Piedmont, where calcareous marl and clay soils, cool nights and long, sunny days allow Nebbiolo to ripen slowly and retain its aromatic complexity. Grapes are hand-harvested at optimal ripeness, with strict selection in the vineyard and again at the winery to ensure only the best clusters make it into the final wine. Scarpa follows a resolutely traditional vinification: extended maceration on the skins to extract color, tannin and nuance, followed by a long, gentle fermentation. The wine is then aged in large, neutral Slavonian oak casks, allowing slow oxygen exchange that polishes the structure while preserving the purity of fruit and the clear expression of terroir.
Food & Serving
Scarpa Barolo Tettimorra 2021 is a natural partner for rich, savory dishes such as braised beef, osso buco, game birds, slow-cooked lamb, and classic Piemontese specialties like tajarin with ragù, brasato al Barolo, and mushroom or truffle risotto. It also pairs beautifully with aged hard cheeses such as Parmigiano Reggiano or mature Pecorino. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) in large Burgundy or Nebbiolo stems. In its youth, this Barolo benefits from 1–2 hours of decanting to help the tannins relax and allow the aromatics to fully open; older bottles should be decanted more gently and for a shorter time.
Producer
Founded in 1854 in Nizza Monferrato, Scarpa is one of Piedmont’s historic reference-point estates and a steadfast guardian of traditional winemaking. The winery gained renewed prestige in the mid-20th century under Mario Pesce, who championed meticulous vineyard work, low yields and long cask aging at a time when many sought quicker, more modern styles. Today, Scarpa is celebrated for its classically structured, long-lived Barolo and Barbaresco, as well as benchmark Barbera and other regional wines. Their commitment to careful, artisanal production and a terroir-driven philosophy has made Scarpa a favorite among collectors and sommeliers seeking authentic, ageworthy expressions of Piedmont.
