Tasting Notes
In the glass, La Bogliona 2020 shows a deep, intense ruby colour with a vibrant purple rim, hinting at both concentration and freshness. The nose opens with pure black cherry and wild raspberry, followed by notes of plum, violets and dried rose, then layers of sweet spice, cedar, tobacco leaf and a subtle earthy-mineral undertone. On the palate, this is full-bodied yet impeccably balanced, with Barbera’s trademark high acidity giving vertical lift to the rich fruit core. Flavours of dark cherry, blackcurrant and macerated red berries intertwine with hints of licorice, cocoa, leather and a touch of savoury herbs. The tannins are fine but firm, providing structure without heaviness, and the long, sapid finish carries notes of spice and crushed stone. While already enjoyable with a decant, the 2020 clearly has the structure to evolve beautifully for 10–15 years or more, gaining complexity and tertiary nuances over time.

Production
La Bogliona comes from Scarpa’s prized single vineyard in the Asti area, where Barbera vines grow on calcareous clay and sandy marl slopes at good altitude, benefiting from significant diurnal temperature swings. This classic Piedmontese terroir yields grapes with intense aromatics, vibrant acidity and natural concentration. Harvest is done by hand with meticulous selection in the vineyard and again at the winery to ensure only perfectly ripe, healthy berries are used. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled vessels with traditional maceration on the skins to extract colour, aroma and structure without harshness. The wine is then aged for an extended period in large, neutral Slavonian oak botti, followed by additional bottle aging before release, allowing the elements to integrate and the wine’s signature elegance and depth to emerge.

Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) for optimal expression. Decant for 1–2 hours in its youth to soften the tannins and allow the aromatics to fully open; older bottles require only a gentle, shorter decant to separate any sediment.
