Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2022 Sassicaia shows a deep, vibrant ruby core with a youthful purple rim, signalling its energy and long life ahead. The nose is refined yet intense, opening with layers of ripe blackcurrant, blackberry and dark cherry, followed by notes of cassis, cedar wood, graphite and pencil shavings. Subtle hints of violets, tobacco leaf, dried Mediterranean herbs and delicate baking spices emerge with aeration, underpinned by a cool mineral edge. On the palate, the wine is poised and elegant, with a silky, finely woven tannin structure that frames the concentrated dark fruit. Flavours of blackcurrant, plum and wild berries mingle with cedar, cigar box, crushed stone and a whisper of vanilla and sweet spice from its French oak élevage. The acidity is bright and beautifully integrated, lending remarkable freshness and precision to the wine’s generous mid-palate. The finish is long, linear and saline, echoing graphite, spice and pure dark fruit. While already captivating in its youth, the 2022 has impressive aging potential; carefully cellared, it should evolve gracefully for 15–25 years, gaining further complexity, tertiary nuances and textural harmony over time.

Production
The vineyards of Tenuta San Guido lie in Bolgheri on the Tuscan coast, planted on distinctive, gravelly and sandy soils strewn with stones – the very origin of the name “Sassicaia,” meaning “place of many stones.” This well-drained, mineral-rich terroir, combined with sea breezes and significant diurnal temperature shifts, provides ideal conditions for Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc to ripen slowly and evenly while retaining freshness. Grapes for Sassicaia 2022 are meticulously hand-harvested and undergo strict selection to ensure only perfectly ripe, healthy clusters are used. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks to preserve purity of fruit and aromatic precision, with gentle extraction to achieve finesse rather than power. The wine is then aged for around 24 months in French oak barriques, a significant proportion of which are new, allowing it to gain depth, polish and complexity without losing its hallmark elegance and tension.

Sassicaia 2022 is a natural partner for refined, flavourful dishes such as dry-aged bistecca alla fiorentina, roasted lamb with rosemary and garlic, braised beef short ribs or venison with wild mushrooms. It also pairs beautifully with truffle-infused dishes, hard aged cheeses like Parmigiano Reggiano or Pecorino Toscano, and rich game birds. For optimal enjoyment, serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F). In its youth, the wine benefits from 1–2 hours in a decanter to allow the bouquet to fully open and the tannins to soften slightly; as it matures, a gentle decant to remove any sediment and 30–45 minutes of aeration will be sufficient to reveal its full complexity.

Tenuta San Guido is one of Italy’s most revered estates, situated in Bolgheri along the Tuscan coast, and is the birthplace of Sassicaia – the wine that effectively created the “Super Tuscan” category. Founded by Mario Incisa della Rocchetta, who began planting Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc in the 1940s, the estate was inspired by the great First Growths of Bordeaux and by the striking similarity between their gravelly soils and those of his property. Initially produced only for family consumption, Sassicaia was first released commercially with the 1968 vintage and rapidly gained international acclaim. It became the first Italian wine to receive 100 points from Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate and is regularly awarded the coveted Tre Bicchieri by Gambero Rosso. Today, Tenuta San Guido oversees about 90 hectares of vineyards divided into carefully selected parcels and remains a reference point for Cabernet-based wines in Italy, with Sassicaia standing as a living legend and a cornerstone of fine wine collections worldwide.
