Description
Sassetti Livio Pertimali Brunello di Montalcino 2017 is a classically styled Brunello that leans into elegance rather than sheer power. Light on its feet yet full of character, it showcases bright cherry fruit and remarkable purity that really jumps from the glass. This bottling comes from the famed Pertimali vineyards in the Montosoli area, one of Montalcino’s most respected crus, where the Sassetti family has been crafting benchmark Brunello for generations.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2017 Brunello di Montalcino appears a luminous, transparent ruby with garnet reflections towards the rim, signaling both youth and classic Sangiovese character. The nose is lifted and precise with vivid notes of sour cherry, red currant and raspberry, supported by hints of dried rose, blood orange, sweet spice, and a faint touch of Tuscan herbs and cedar.
On the palate, this is a medium-bodied, finely etched Brunello with a lovely line of acidity that makes the fruit feel energetic and mouthwatering. The bright red cherry and pomegranate tones are layered with subtle tobacco leaf, licorice, and a whisper of earth, while the tannins are remarkably silky and well-integrated, framing the wine without ever feeling harsh. The finish is clean, long and savory, encouraging another sip. While the wine is already very approachable and charming now, it still has the structure to evolve gracefully for 8–12 years, gaining more tertiary notes of leather, dried flowers and forest floor with time in the cellar.
Production
This Brunello is crafted from 100% Sangiovese (Sangiovese Grosso) sourced from the Pertimali estate vineyards in Montosoli, a cooler northern sector of Montalcino renowned for its marl- and limestone-rich soils and excellent drainage. The combination of altitude and exposure allows the grapes to ripen slowly, preserving bright acidity and aromatic lift even in warmer vintages like 2017. Grapes are typically harvested by hand, with strict selection in the vineyard and again in the cellar to ensure only perfectly ripe clusters make it into the final wine. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled tanks with an extended maceration on the skins to extract fine tannins and complex flavors. The wine is then aged traditionally in large Slavonian oak casks for several years, followed by additional bottle aging before release, allowing the various components to harmonize and the hallmark Pertimali elegance to emerge.
Food & Serving
This Brunello’s bright fruit and refined structure make it a versatile partner at the table. It shines alongside classic Tuscan dishes such as bistecca alla fiorentina, grilled lamb chops with rosemary, wild boar ragù, or pappardelle with porcini mushrooms. It also works beautifully with truffle-infused dishes, slow-braised beef, and aged cheeses like Pecorino Toscano or Parmigiano Reggiano. Serve at 16–18°C in large Burgundy or Bordeaux stems to let the aromas fully unfurl, and consider decanting for 45–60 minutes if drinking in the near term to soften the tannins and allow the wine’s floral and spice notes to fully open.
Producer
The Sassetti family has been cultivating vineyards in Montalcino for four generations, with the Pertimali estate in Montosoli standing as the heart of their identity. Livio Sassetti was among the early champions of Brunello di Montalcino, helping to shape the region’s reputation for ageworthy, terroir-driven wines. Today, the estate is considered one of the benchmarks of the northern Montalcino style, known for Brunello that marries structure with finesse and vibrant acidity. Sassetti’s Pertimali bottlings are frequently praised by international critics and collectors alike, consistently ranking among the most respected traditional Brunelli of the appellation.
