Description
Saraja Libaltai IGT Carignano 2022 is a lively and characterful Sardinian red that brings together the spice and depth of Carignano with the juicy freshness shaped by the island’s coastal climate. It’s a wine with real regional identity, rooted in the southern vineyards of Sardinia and carrying the story of a French grape that found an enduring home in Italian soil.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows a deep, inviting red colour. The nose is expressive and layered, with roasted spices, anise, dark cherries, blackberries, and a hint of strawberry, giving it both warmth and lift.
On the palate, the wine is supple and juicy, with ripe fruit wrapped around a fresh, energetic core that keeps everything balanced. The finish is flavorful and spice-driven, with enough structure to suggest good short- to medium-term ageing potential, especially as the fruit and savory notes continue to knit together.
Production
Libaltai is made from Carignano, a grape that thrives in southern Sardinia, particularly in the Sulcis area, where warm Mediterranean conditions are moderated by cooling sea influence. The result is a terroir-driven wine that reflects both the heat of the island and the freshness of its maritime surroundings. The Isola dei Nuraghi appellation also nods to Sardinia’s famous Nuraghi stone towers, adding a strong cultural dimension to the wine’s identity.
Food & Serving
This is an excellent match for charcuterie, grilled lamb, roasted meats, and richly seasoned Mediterranean dishes. Serve at around 16°C for the best balance of fruit and freshness, and decanting is optional but can help open the aromatics if the wine is served shortly after opening.
Producer
Saraja is a Sardinian producer closely associated with expressive wines that highlight the island’s native grapes and distinctive terroir. By working with varieties like Carignano, the estate contributes to the growing reputation of Sardinia as a source of serious, personality-filled red wines. Their Libaltai bottling is a strong example of how traditional island viticulture can be presented with clarity, balance, and modern appeal.
