San Marzano Talò Primitivo Merlot Salento IGP 2024 is a characterful southern Italian red that brings together two complementary grapes in a polished, approachable style. From one of Puglia’s most respected producers, it captures the warmth, depth, and Mediterranean soul of Salento in every glass.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows a deep ruby-red color with inviting purple reflections. The nose is generous and ripe, offering notes of dark berries, plum, and cherry, layered with subtle spice, Mediterranean herbs, and a touch of oak from the short passage in French barrels. On the palate, Merlot brings softness and round fruit, while Primitivo adds richness, structure, and a more intense, sun-kissed character. The wine is smooth and balanced, with supple tannins and a rounded finish. It can be enjoyed young for its freshness and fruit, but it also has enough structure to develop nicely over the next few years.

Production
Talò Primitivo Merlot comes from vineyards in Salento, where the vines grow close to the sea and the Mediterranean scrubland, benefiting from the region’s warm climate and breezes. The soils are clay-based with a good amount of stones and surface shallowness, helping to concentrate flavor in the grapes. Harvesting is done by hand in the first half of September using baskets, followed by temperature-controlled maceration and alcoholic fermentation with selected yeasts for around 10 days. The wine is then matured in French oak casks for 4–6 months.

Food & Serving
This is a versatile red that works beautifully with grilled meats, roasted lamb, pasta with rich tomato sauces, mature cheeses, and dishes featuring mushrooms or Mediterranean herbs. Serve it at 16–18°C, and decanting for about 20–30 minutes is a good idea if you want to open up the aromas and soften the texture.
