Description
San Marzano Talò Primitivo Merlot 2023 is a generous Southern Italian red that brings together equal parts Primitivo and Merlot. Rich, full-bodied and polished, it combines the ripe fruit character of Puglia with the softer, rounded texture of Merlot, while reflecting the region’s long-standing winemaking tradition.
Tasting Notes
Deep ruby red in appearance, the wine offers inviting aromas of ripe blackberries, plums and dark cherries, complemented by subtle hints of spice and gentle oak. On the palate, it is full and velvety, with generous dark-fruit flavours, supple tannins and a well-integrated, warming finish.
The French barrique ageing adds nuance and smoothness without overshadowing the fruit. Ready to enjoy now, it should develop further complexity over the next few years when stored in suitable conditions.
Production
The grapes are sourced from vineyards situated more than 100 metres above sea level in Puglia, where the Mediterranean climate, red soils and cooling influences from the Ionian and Adriatic Seas shape the wines. Primitivo and Merlot are harvested and vinified together in equal proportions, beginning with a cool maceration and fermentation to preserve freshness and fruit character. The wine then matures for 4–6 months in French barriques, gaining additional richness and polish.
Food & Serving
A natural match for grilled and roasted red meats, slow-cooked beef, hearty pasta dishes and rich tomato-based sauces. It also pairs well with mature cheeses and savoury Puglian specialities. Serve slightly cool, at around 16–18°C. Decanting is not essential for this approachable vintage, though 20–30 minutes in a decanter can help open the aromas and soften the palate.
Producer
Cantine San Marzano was founded in 1962 by 19 winegrowers in the heart of Puglia and today brings together more than 1,200 growers. Located between the Ionian Sea and the Adriatic Sea, the cooperative is deeply rooted in the DOC Primitivo di Manduria area and its distinctive red soils, olive groves and vineyards. San Marzano combines modern winemaking technology with generations of local expertise, producing expressive, full-bodied wines that capture the character of this demanding Mediterranean terroir.
