San Marzano, Primitivo di Manduria Anniversario 62 Riserva 2019

San Marzano’s Anniversario 62 Riserva 2019 is a rich and polished expression of Primitivo di Manduria, created to commemorate the 19 founding growers who established the cooperative in 1962. Combining the warmth of Puglia with extended ageing in French and American oak, it offers generous dark-fruit character, refined tannins and impressive depth.

Tasting Notes
Deep and intense in appearance, the wine opens with a complex nose of ripe plums and cherries, layered with tobacco, sweet spices and subtle oak. The palate is soft and inviting at first, revealing notes of cocoa, coffee and vanilla before developing into a full, rich finish supported by refined tannins. The 2019 vintage is approachable now, especially with decanting, but its concentration and structure should allow it to develop further over the next several years. With suitable cellaring, it can gain additional savoury and tertiary complexity.

Production
The grapes are grown in the Primitivo di Manduria DOC area of Puglia, between the Ionian and Adriatic seas. The region’s red soils, Mediterranean climate and challenging conditions—including drought, frost and Sirocco winds—help produce naturally concentrated fruit, particularly from older vineyards. The grapes are destemmed and crushed, followed by cold maceration and alcoholic fermentation at controlled temperatures. The wine then matures for 18 months in a combination of French and American oak barrels.

Food & Serving
A natural partner for rich starters, grilled or braised red meat, game and hearty dishes from the oven. It also works well with mature hard cheeses and richly seasoned Mediterranean cuisine. Serve slightly below room temperature, around 16–18°C. Decant for 30–60 minutes before serving to soften the tannins and allow the aromas to unfold.

Cantine San Marzano was founded in 1962 when 19 local grape growers joined forces in the town of San Marzano, in the heart of Puglia’s acclaimed Primitivo di Manduria region. The cooperative has since grown to include more than 1,200 growers, combining modern, technologically advanced facilities with a strong respect for the area’s longstanding winemaking traditions. Its location among vineyards and olive groves, together with the distinctive red soils and Mediterranean terroir, has made San Marzano an important ambassador for high-quality Puglian wines.
