San Marzano Anniversario 62 Primitivo di Manduria Riserva 2020 is a rich, beautifully structured expression of Puglia’s signature grape. Made from carefully selected Primitivo from very old vines and matured for 18 months in French and American oak, it celebrates San Marzano’s heritage, which began in 1962, with impressive depth and polish.

Tasting Notes
The wine shows a deep ruby-red colour. Its generous bouquet combines black cherry jam, ripe black cherries and plums with subtle citrus zest and thyme. Hints of cinnamon and toasted oak add warmth and complexity without overpowering the fruit. On the palate, softness takes centre stage, followed by refreshing acidity and ripe, well-integrated tannins. The result is a full-bodied yet balanced wine, with concentrated dark-fruit flavours, gentle spice and a persistent finish. It is delicious now, but should develop further over the next 5–8 years when stored in a cool, dark environment.

Production
The Primitivo grapes are sourced from very old vineyards in the Manduria area of Apulia, where the warm Mediterranean climate and sun-rich conditions help produce deeply flavoured, naturally concentrated fruit. Grapes are carefully selected before vinification, and the wine is then matured for 18 months in a combination of French and American oak barrels. This extended ageing contributes layers of toast, spice and vanilla while preserving the wine’s ripe fruit character and freshness.

Food & Serving
A natural match for richly flavoured dishes such as slow-cooked beef, grilled lamb, braised meats and game. It also pairs well with hearty pasta dishes, aubergine-based recipes and mature hard cheeses. Serve at 16–18°C. Decanting for 30–60 minutes is recommended, particularly when enjoying the wine in its youth, to allow its fruit, oak and spice notes to come together.
