Description
San Marzano’s 60 Sessantanni Edition is a flagship Primitivo from some of the winery’s oldest vines, offering a richly concentrated expression of Manduria. Crafted in one of Puglia’s most celebrated DOCs, it combines deep fruit, elegance, and the character of a region shaped by Mediterranean winds, red soils, and generations of grape growers.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows a deep, intense ruby colour with plenty of visual depth. The nose is generous and ripe, with aromas of cherry, plum, and a gentle spice layer, rounded out by subtle hints of tobacco.
The palate is full-bodied and smooth, with supple tannins and a plush texture that gives the wine both power and balance. Notes of cocoa, coffee, and vanilla carry through the finish, adding warmth and complexity. It has the structure to age gracefully for several years, gaining even more integration and nuance over time.
Production
This wine comes from the heart of Primitivo di Manduria, where vineyards grow on red, iron-rich soils mixed with limestone and stones, between the Ionian and Adriatic seas. The Mediterranean terroir, together with extreme conditions such as drought, frost, and the Sirocco wind, contributes to low yields and highly concentrated grapes from San Marzano’s oldest and finest vines. Vinification is carried out with the aim of preserving the variety’s natural richness while bringing out finesse, depth, and polished tannins.
Food & Serving
Best served with roasted or grilled red meats, slow-cooked lamb, game, and hearty Mediterranean dishes such as rich pasta with meat sauces or aubergine-based recipes. Serve at around 16–18°C. Decanting for about 30–60 minutes is recommended to allow the wine’s aromas and texture to open fully.
Producer
Cantine San Marzano was founded in 1962 by 19 local winegrowers who joined forces in the town of San Marzano in Puglia. Today, the cooperative brings together more than 1,200 producers and is known for combining modern winemaking technology with deep respect for the region’s long viticultural traditions. It has become one of the leading names in Puglia, particularly for expressive and high-quality Primitivo wines.
