Description
San Giusto a Rentennano Percarlo 2020 in magnum format is a powerful, organically farmed Sangiovese that captures the richness and intensity of this remarkable Tuscan vintage. Dense, dark fruit, substantial structure and a vibrant line of acidity come together in a wine that is both hedonistic and impeccably balanced. Bottled in 1.5L, this is a collector’s format of one of Tuscany’s modern icons, built for long-term cellaring and memorable occasions.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, Percarlo 2020 is deep ruby with a youthful, almost opaque core and vivid purple reflections, hinting at its concentration. The nose opens slowly at first, then unfurls layers of black cherry, dark plum and ripe blackberry, intertwined with notes of violet, sweet spice, tobacco leaf, and a subtle earthy, ferrous edge that is so typical of great Sangiovese from this area.
On the palate, the wine is full-bodied and intense, yet remarkably poised. The 15% alcohol is seamlessly integrated, wrapped in ripe, polished tannins and lifted by a lively, mouthwatering acidity. Flavors echo the nose—dark cherry and black plum compote, hints of wild herbs, licorice, cocoa and a touch of graphite—delivering impressive depth without excess heaviness. Despite the power of the vintage, the wine still feels youthful and somewhat reserved, suggesting it is only at the beginning of its evolution. In magnum, the aging potential is excellent: it should improve and gain complexity over 12–20+ years, with the structure to go even further in a good cellar.
Production
Percarlo is sourced from organically farmed estate vineyards around the historic San Giusto a Rentennano property in the hills of Gaiole in Chianti, an area known for its rocky galestro and alberese soils that naturally limit yields and enhance Sangiovese’s aromatic precision. The warm 2020 growing season, combined with these well-drained, stony slopes, produced grapes of great concentration and ripeness, yet the estate’s focus on careful canopy management and balanced yields preserved freshness. Grapes are harvested by hand at optimal maturity and rigorously sorted. Fermentation traditionally takes place in temperature-controlled tanks with prolonged maceration on the skins to extract color, tannin and aromatic complexity, followed by aging in oak (largely French barriques and tonneaux) to refine the structure and integrate the generous fruit. The wine is bottled with minimal intervention, allowing the character of the vintage and terroir to shine.
Food & Serving
This is a serious, structured Tuscan red that shines alongside rich, flavorful dishes: think bistecca alla fiorentina, grilled ribeye, slow-braised lamb shanks, wild boar ragù over pappardelle, or aged Tuscan pecorino and other firm, mature cheeses. For best enjoyment, serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F). Given its youth and concentration, decanting is highly recommended: 2–3 hours for current drinking will help the wine open and soften, while an extended slow-ox in the bottle before service can further reveal its layers. As it ages, shorter decanting times will be sufficient, but this 2020 magnum will reward patience both in the glass and in the cellar.
Producer
San Giusto a Rentennano is a historic estate in Gaiole in Chianti, with origins as a medieval fortress before becoming one of the reference-point producers in the Chianti Classico area. Family-owned and organically farmed, the estate has built a reputation for crafting profound, terroir-driven Sangiovese that bridges tradition and modern precision. Percarlo, first released in the 1980s, quickly rose to cult status as one of Tuscany’s great pure Sangiovese expressions, consistently earning high critical acclaim and helping redefine what Sangiovese could achieve outside the strict confines of classic appellation rules. Today, San Giusto a Rentennano is widely regarded as one of the most important and quality-focused producers in the region, with Percarlo standing at the pinnacle of their range.
