Description
Le Carillon de l’Angélus is the second wine of the renowned Château Angélus, offering an approachable expression of Saint-Émilion’s celebrated Right Bank style. The 2021 vintage combines the plush character of Merlot with the fragrance and structure of Cabernet Franc, reflecting the estate’s signature balance and elegance.
Tasting Notes
Deep ruby in colour, the wine opens with aromas of ripe red and black berries, plum, violet and subtle spice, with hints of cedar and cocoa emerging in the glass. The palate is medium- to full-bodied, combining juicy blackberry and dark cherry flavours with refined tannins, fresh acidity and a gently savoury finish.
Although enjoyable in its youth for its vibrant fruit and supple texture, Le Carillon de l’Angélus has the structure to develop further complexity over the next 6–10 years when properly stored.
Production
Produced from selected grapes grown in and around Château Angélus’s Saint-Émilion vineyards, the wine reflects the region’s limestone and clay-rich soils, which contribute freshness, depth and a distinctive mineral character. The grapes are carefully harvested and sorted before fermentation and maturation in oak, with the precise blend varying according to the character of the vintage. As a second wine, Le Carillon de l’Angélus is designed to express the estate’s style with a more accessible profile than the grand vin.
Food & Serving
Serve at 16–18°C after allowing the bottle to settle. A short decant of around 30–45 minutes can help open the wine, particularly in its early years. Its polished fruit and savoury depth pair well with roast lamb, grilled or braised beef, duck, mushroom dishes, and mature cheeses.
Producer
Château Angélus is one of Saint-Émilion’s most distinguished estates, with roots dating back to the 18th century. Named for the Angelus bells once heard ringing from the surrounding churches, the château has become especially celebrated for its Cabernet Franc-led style, powerful hillside terroir and meticulous winemaking. Le Carillon de l’Angélus provides an accessible introduction to the character and heritage of this landmark Bordeaux producer.
