Rutherford Wine Company, Napa Valley Chardonnay 2019 White

Rutherford Wine Company’s 2019 Napa Valley Chardonnay is a full-bodied, fruit-driven white wine that combines ripe orchard fruit with the warm, comforting character of French oak. Made in Rutherford, one of Napa Valley’s most celebrated AVAs, it reflects a region better known for Cabernet Sauvignon while showcasing the area’s ability to produce expressive, premium Chardonnay.

Tasting Notes
The wine displays a rich golden hue. Its inviting nose offers aromas of ripe Asian pear, dried apricot and white peach, layered with notes of baked apple pie, caramel and toasted oak. On the palate, it is generous and rounded, with flavours of vanilla, sweet oak and baked fruit, leading to a lingering finish reminiscent of lemon meringue pie. Enjoyable now for its plush, approachable style, this Chardonnay is best appreciated in its youth and over the next few years, while its fruit and oak remain in balance.

Production
The winery is located along the scenic Silverado Trail in the Rutherford district of Napa Valley, an area recognised for producing outstanding wines from a range of premium grape varieties. The wine was matured in a combination of stainless-steel tanks and French oak barrels, allowing the fresh fruit character to remain present while adding layers of vanilla, caramel, toast and spice. Specific harvesting and fermentation details are not provided.

Food & Serving
A versatile choice as an aperitif, this Chardonnay pairs beautifully with roast or grilled chicken, grilled fish appetisers, creamy vegetable soups and a selection of mature or semi-soft cheeses. Serve lightly chilled at approximately 10–12°C. Decanting is not necessary, although allowing the wine to breathe briefly in the glass can help reveal its baked-fruit and oak nuances.

Producer
Rutherford Wine Company is situated on the former site of Round Hill Winery, founded in 1978 by Ernie and Virginia Van Asperen and Charlie Abela. Following the Van Asperens’ retirement in 2000, Marko and Theo Zaninovich—longstanding shareholders alongside the Van Asperen family—took over the property. The vineyards were replanted with premium vines, and both the winery and tasting room were extensively renovated, while the estate’s century-old olive grove and understated charm were preserved. The winery welcomes visitors throughout the week and occupies a notable position in Rutherford, one of Napa Valley’s sixteen designated AVAs.
