Rupert & Rothschild, Baron Edmond 2021

Rupert & Rothschild Baron Edmond 2021 is a polished Bordeaux-style red from Stellenbosch, created through the partnership of two renowned wine families: Rupert of South Africa and Rothschild of France. Built on a blend of Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec, it combines modern fruit expression with classic structure and reflects the ambition behind the historic Vignerons R & R project at Fredericksburg.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, this is likely to show a deep ruby to garnet hue with the concentration expected from a Stellenbosch red. The nose should offer layered aromas of ripe blackcurrant, plum, cassis and dark cherry, supported by cedar, graphite, tobacco and a subtle floral lift from Cabernet Franc. On the palate, expect a balanced, medium-to-full-bodied wine with ripe fruit, fine tannins and a well-defined, elegant texture. The 18 months in 225L barriques should add notes of spice, toast and polished oak without overwhelming the fruit. This is a wine built for cellaring, with the structure to develop gracefully for at least 15 years.

Production
The grapes come from Stellenbosch, one of South Africa’s most respected regions for Bordeaux varieties, where warm days and cooling influences help achieve ripeness while preserving freshness and structure. The fruit was hand-harvested from early February to the end of March, with a relatively low average yield of 8 tons per hectare, helping to ensure concentration and quality. After vinification, the wine was matured for 18 months in 225L barriques to build complexity and a classical frame.

Food & Serving
This wine pairs beautifully with grilled or roasted lamb, beef fillet, venison, mushroom dishes and rich slow-cooked stews. It is best served at around 16–18°C, and decanting for 1–2 hours is recommended if opening young, to allow the aromas and tannins to fully unfold.

Rupert & Rothschild is the result of a collaboration between the Rupert family of South Africa and the Rothschild family of France, with roots in the prestigious Bordeaux tradition. Based at the historic Fredericksburg estate between Franschhoek and Paarl, the project was founded to combine international winemaking expertise with deep local knowledge. Under the guidance of cellar master Yvonne Lester, the estate has become known for producing refined, age-worthy wines with a distinctive balance of modern fruit and classic elegance.
