Description
R de Ruinart NV is the signature cuvée from Champagne’s oldest house, a refined non-vintage Brut that captures the essence of Ruinart’s elegant, Chardonnay‑driven style. Lively, precise and beautifully balanced, it feels fresher and less overtly sweet than many standard Bruts, making it a particularly compelling choice for both enthusiasts and newcomers to fine Champagne. With its pure citrus, jasmine and green apple character, this cuvée offers a seamless introduction to the Ruinart house style and the timeless finesse of great Champagne.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, R de Ruinart NV shows a luminous, pale golden colour with fine, persistent bubbles forming a delicate mousse. The nose is expressive yet refined, opening with fresh lemon zest, green apple and white flowers, especially jasmine and acacia blossom, followed by subtle notes of brioche, chalk and a hint of almond.
On the palate the Champagne is crisp, medium‑bodied and wonderfully precise. Bright citrus and crunchy green apple flavours lead the way, supported by a chalky minerality and a very fine, creamy texture from extended lees ageing. The dosage is well‑judged, giving a sense of harmony without feeling sweet. The finish is long, pure and mouth‑watering, with lingering floral and citrus notes. Enjoyed now, it offers immediate pleasure, but it also has the structure to develop additional complexity over 3–5 years in bottle.
Production
R de Ruinart is crafted from carefully selected vineyards across the heart of Champagne, primarily the Côte des Blancs and Montagne de Reims, where the cool climate and chalk‑rich soils give exceptional freshness and minerality. The blend typically brings together a majority of Chardonnay with Pinot Noir (and sometimes a touch of Meunier) to create a house style that is both vibrant and complete. Grapes are harvested by hand at optimal ripeness to preserve acidity and aromatic purity, then gently pressed to obtain the finest cuvée juice. Fermentation takes place in temperature‑controlled stainless steel to retain freshness, and a significant proportion of reserve wines is incorporated to ensure consistency from year to year. The wine then matures for several years on its lees in Ruinart’s historic chalk cellars before disgorgement and a carefully balanced Brut dosage.
Food & Serving
This Champagne is exceptionally versatile at the table, making it perfect as both an apéritif and a partner for delicate dishes. Pair it with oysters, scallops, sashimi, or grilled white fish to highlight its citrus and mineral notes, or serve alongside sushi, light poultry dishes, fresh goat cheese, or simple pasta with lemon and herbs. For canapés, it works beautifully with smoked salmon blinis or delicate tempura. Serve well‑chilled at around 8–10°C (46–50°F). Decanting is not necessary, but pouring into tulip‑shaped Champagne glasses rather than narrow flutes will allow the aromatics of citrus, jasmine and green apple to fully unfold.
