Description
Romuald Valot Pouilly-Fuissé 1er Cru Reyssier 2022 is a refined white Burgundy that captures the elegance and mineral precision of top-tier Chardonnay from southern Mâconnais. Sourced from the prestigious 1er Cru Reyssier vineyard, this cuvée showcases the tension between ripe fruit and chalky freshness that has made Pouilly-Fuissé increasingly sought after. It brings together the purity of carefully grown Chardonnay with the finesse and savoir-faire of one of Burgundy’s long-standing family négociant houses.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, this Pouilly-Fuissé 1er Cru shows a bright, pale gold color with subtle green reflections, signaling both youth and freshness. The nose is expressive yet refined, with notes of ripe orchard fruits—pear, golden apple, and white peach—woven together with citrus zest, acacia blossom, and a delicate hint of toasted hazelnut and vanilla from its time in oak. Underneath lies a distinct mineral streak, recalling wet stone and chalk.
On the palate, the wine is precise and layered, combining a silky, almost creamy texture with a vibrant backbone of acidity. Flavors of lemon curd, ripe pear, and stone fruits unfold gradually, supported by nuances of fresh butter, brioche, and a fine salinity that lengthens the finish. The structure is harmonious and balanced, with enough concentration and tension to reward a few years of cellaring. Enjoyable now for its youthful energy and clarity, it should develop additional complexity—more honeyed, nutty nuances and deeper minerality—over the next 5–8 years under good storage conditions.
Production
Reyssier is a premier cru terroir in Pouilly-Fuissé characterized by limestone-rich soils with clay components and well-exposed, sun-drenched slopes—conditions that are ideal for Chardonnay of both ripeness and precision. The grapes are typically harvested by hand to ensure careful selection of only the healthiest, most perfectly ripe bunches, preserving the natural freshness and aromatic integrity of the fruit. In the cellar, the must is gently pressed and fermented at controlled temperatures, with a portion of the wine traditionally raised in French oak barrels to add texture and subtle spice, while the rest may remain in stainless steel to retain purity and tension. Aging on fine lees helps to build mid-palate weight and complexity, resulting in a wine that is both expressive in its youth and structured enough for graceful evolution.
Food & Serving
This 1er Cru Pouilly-Fuissé is a natural partner for elegant seafood and refined poultry dishes. Try it with butter-poached lobster, pan-seared scallops, grilled turbot, or roasted chicken with morel cream sauce; it also pairs beautifully with veal in light jus, truffled pasta, or semi-hard cheeses such as Comté and aged Gruyère. Serve at around 10–12°C (50–54°F) to highlight both its aromatic complexity and its mineral edge. A brief decant of 20–30 minutes, especially in its youth, can help the wine open up, allowing the fruit, floral tones, and fine oak nuances to fully express themselves.
Producer
The story behind this bottling is closely linked to the Goichot family, one of Burgundy’s enduring independent négociant houses. It began in 1947, when André Goichot founded his company and, in 1976, gave it a decisive push forward by investing in Château de la Guiche and acquiring the Les Dressolles parcel in Meursault—both key steps in building a serious Burgundy portfolio. Today based in Beaune, the family is among the last remaining independent, family-owned négociants in the region, combining long-standing grower relationships with their own estates. In 2015 they took on exclusive distribution of Domaine des Guignottes near Buxy on the Côte Chalonnaise, and in 2016 they assumed stewardship of Château du Cray, a historic 22-hectare property whose vines surround the château on privileged east to south-east–facing slopes. This combination of history, terroir focus, and family continuity underpins the quality and character of cuvées like this Pouilly-Fuissé 1er Cru.
