Description
Rocche Costamagna Barolo Rocche dell'Annunziata Bricco Francesco Riserva 2019 is a single-vineyard Barolo from one of La Morra’s most revered crus. Crafted from 100% Nebbiolo, this Riserva bottling represents the estate’s top selection from the heart of Rocche dell’Annunziata, a site famed for its finesse and longevity. Named “Bricco Francesco” in homage to the family lineage, it is a powerful yet refined expression of Barolo that rewards both patience and curiosity.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the wine shows a luminous, deep garnet hue with brick-red highlights at the rim, hinting at its structure and age-worthiness. The nose is complex and layered, opening slowly with notes of dried rose petals, violet, and tar, followed by red cherry, raspberry, and wild strawberry. With air, darker nuances emerge: licorice, cedar, tobacco leaf, leather, and a gentle spice lift from oak.
On the palate, this Barolo is firmly structured yet finely textured, with Nebbiolo’s hallmark tannins wrapped around concentrated red and black fruit. Flavors of sour cherry, cranberry, blood orange, and pomegranate intertwine with savory undertones of truffle, forest floor, and sweet spices. The acidity is vibrant and linear, giving great tension and length to the wine. The finish is long, persistent, and elegant, promising excellent evolution. While approachable with sufficient aeration, this 2019 Riserva is built for aging and should develop beautifully over 12–20 years, gaining further complexity, tertiary aromas, and silkier tannins.
Production
Rocche dell’Annunziata is one of the most prized MGA (cru) vineyards in La Morra, characterized by calcareous marl soils with a high content of clay and limestone that impart both aroma and finesse. The elevation and exposure offer excellent ripening conditions while preserving acidity, giving Barolo of notable elegance and aromatic intensity. Grapes for the Bricco Francesco Riserva are typically hand-harvested at optimal phenolic maturity, with rigorous bunch selection both in the vineyard and at the winery. Fermentation usually takes place in temperature-controlled tanks, with extended maceration on the skins to extract color, tannin, and aromatic compounds from Nebbiolo’s thick skins. The wine is then aged for an extended period—traditionally in large oak casks (botti) and possibly a combination of large format and smaller barrels—before further refinement in bottle, allowing the Riserva to gain depth, complexity, and balance before release.
Food & Serving
This Riserva Barolo is an excellent partner for rich, savory dishes and fine cuts of meat. Ideal pairings include braised beef (brasato al Barolo), slow-cooked lamb shank, veal cheeks, game birds, and truffle-infused dishes such as tajarin with white truffle or porcini risotto. Mature hard cheeses like Parmigiano Reggiano, aged Castelmagno, or Pecorino also work beautifully. Serve at 16–18°C (about 60–64°F) in large Burgundy or Nebbiolo-specific glasses to showcase its aromatic complexity. Decant for 1–3 hours, especially in its youth, to allow the wine to open and soften, revealing its full spectrum of floral, fruit, and savory notes.
