Description
Roc de Cambes Côtes de Bourg 2019 Magnum is one of the most sought-after wines from an appellation that has long stood in the shadow of Bordeaux’s more famous names. Crafted by François Mitjavile, the celebrated winemaker behind Château Tertre Roteboeuf, it combines the generosity of the Right Bank with remarkable polish, depth and individuality. The magnum format makes this an especially impressive choice for collectors and celebratory occasions.
Tasting Notes
Deep ruby-red in colour, the wine opens with expressive aromas of black cherry, blackberry, plum and cassis, complemented by floral tones, oriental spice, cedar and a hint of dark chocolate. The nose is layered and inviting, with the concentration expected from the outstanding 2019 vintage.
On the palate, ripe dark fruit is carried by a silky, generous texture and finely integrated tannins. Freshness provides balance and energy, while notes of liquorice, spice and subtle mineral nuances emerge through the long, complex finish. The 2019 is approachable with decanting, but the magnum format will encourage slower, graceful development in the cellar. It should gain further complexity over the coming years and drink beautifully well into the 2030s.
Production
Roc de Cambes is made in the Côtes de Bourg, on Bordeaux’s Right Bank, where hillside vineyards benefit from the moderating influence of the Gironde and a terroir capable of producing richly textured, structured red wines. The 2019 vintage delivered excellent ripeness alongside balancing freshness. The wine is produced with careful harvesting and a traditional Bordeaux vinification designed to preserve the character of the fruit, followed by élevage that allows its tannins, oak and aromatic complexity to integrate. The result is a concentrated yet refined expression of the estate’s distinctive style.
Food & Serving
Serve at around 16–18°C after allowing the bottle to come to temperature. Decant the wine for approximately 1–2 hours when drinking it young; older bottles may need gentler handling and a shorter decant. Its depth and polished structure make it a natural partner for roast lamb, beef tenderloin, venison, duck, grilled entrecôte and richly flavoured mushroom dishes. The magnum is particularly well suited to a substantial dinner or a special occasion shared around the table.
Producer
Roc de Cambes has earned cult status among Bordeaux enthusiasts under the guidance of François Mitjavile, whose work at Château Tertre Roteboeuf has made him one of the Right Bank’s most admired winegrowers. Rather than relying solely on the prestige of a famous appellation, the estate has built its reputation through intensely flavoured, supple and highly individual wines. Roc de Cambes is now widely regarded as one of the leading estates of Côtes de Bourg, demonstrating the appellation’s ability to produce Bordeaux of exceptional character and cellar potential.
