Description

Robert Weil Kiedricher Klosterberg Trocken 2020 is a precision-crafted dry Riesling from one of Rheingau’s most esteemed single vineyards. Drawn from vines up to 50 years old and grown on steep, partly reddish phyllite soils, it offers an unusually fine, flinty expression that edges into Mosel-like elegance. Extended aging on full lees until late July (rather than the traditional April) adds extra depth, texture, and polish, making this one of the standout Klosterberg bottlings from the estate.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2020 Klosterberg Trocken is pale lemon with green reflections, hinting at its youthful energy and freshness. The nose is remarkably delicate yet articulate, opening with bright stone and exotic fruits—think mango, passion fruit, and ripe citrus—layered over a distinct mineral core of crushed rock, iron filings, and wet stone. There’s a lifted, almost smoky-flinty edge that gives the bouquet striking tension and finesse. On the palate, this is dry, vibrant, and tightly woven, with juicy fruit wrapped around a core of salty, mouthwatering acidity. The texture is elegant and finely structured rather than weighty, yet there is real substance and concentration behind the lively citrus, stone fruit, and tropical nuances. A long, focused finish is carried by a refined, linear minerality and a serious, almost savory backbone. While already highly expressive, the structure and acidity suggest excellent aging potential over the next 8–12 years, gaining complexity, spice and tertiary notes with time in bottle.

Production
Kiedricher Klosterberg is a steep, high-elevation vineyard reaching up to around 300 meters above sea level, where the cool Rheingau climate and partly reddish phyllite soils produce Riesling with intense minerality and precision. The old vines—some up to 50 years in age—yield naturally low quantities of concentrated, characterful fruit. Grapes are carefully hand-harvested to ensure optimal ripeness and selection, then gently pressed to preserve aromatic purity. For the 2020 vintage, the wine was aged on its full lees until the end of July for the first time, significantly longer than in previous vintages, which adds textural depth, complexity, and a fine, creamy polish without sacrificing clarity and freshness. Vinification is focused on a clean, temperature-controlled ferment and a precise, terroir-driven style, culminating in a dry Riesling that is both elegant and substantial.

Food & Serving
This refined Rheingau Riesling shines with delicately prepared dishes that echo its freshness and minerality. Try it with ceviche, sashimi, or lightly grilled white fish, as well as scallops, crab, or prawns with citrus and fresh herbs. It pairs beautifully with fine Asian cuisine—especially sushi, lightly spiced Thai or Vietnamese dishes—alongside classic German fare like trout with almond butter or schnitzel with lemon. Soft goat cheese, young Comté, or semi-hard alpine cheeses also work well. Serve chilled at about 8–10°C; a short decant of 15–20 minutes, or simply giving it some time in the glass, helps the delicate fruit and flinty notes fully unfurl.

Producer
Weingut Robert Weil is one of the great names of the Rheingau and a modern benchmark for top-quality Riesling in Germany. Founded in the late 19th century, the estate quickly earned an international reputation for its elegant, long-lived wines, many of which graced the tables of European nobility. Today, Robert Weil is celebrated for its meticulous vineyard work, commitment to steep, slate- and phyllite-rich sites around Kiedrich, and a style that marries precision, purity, and depth. The winery has been instrumental in cementing Rheingau’s status as a premier Riesling region, consistently receiving top scores and critical acclaim for both dry and noble-sweet bottlings, with Kiedricher Klosterberg among its key, historically significant single vineyards.
