Description
Robert Weil Kiedricher Klosterberg Trocken 2019 is a poised, dry Rheingau Riesling that marries ripeness with stony precision. Sourced from the steep Klosterberg vineyard above the village of Kiedrich, it offers the intensity and depth of a Spätlese-style fruit profile, vinified in a dry (trocken) style. This cuvée showcases the estate’s hallmark clarity and elegance, rooted in more than a century of Riesling heritage in the Rheingau.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2019 Klosterberg Trocken tends toward a pale to medium straw-yellow with greenish highlights, hinting at its youthful freshness and mineral drive. The nose is intensely fruited yet cool-toned: think ripe citrus, white peach and mirabelle, layered with flinty, smoky and wet-stone notes that underline its rocky origin. Subtle hints of herbs and flowers add a refined top note.
On the palate, it is round, juicy and elegant, with a super-mature, almost hedonistic fruit core reminiscent of Spätlese-level ripeness, but kept in check by firm acidity and a dry finish. Stone fruit, lime zest and green apple are wrapped in a fine, salty-mineral structure, giving both charm and precision. The 2019 lacks the almost electric vitality of the 2020, but offers a more open, generous texture and immediate appeal. Expect it to drink beautifully now, with the structure and acidity to evolve gracefully for 8–12 years, gaining complexity and a more pronounced smoky-mineral character over time.
Production
Kiedricher Klosterberg is a steep, south- to southwest-facing hillside in the Rheingau, characterized by stony, weathered phyllite and slate soils that store heat yet drain well, ideal for Riesling of depth and minerality. The vines are typically hand-tended and harvested manually to ensure precise selection of perfectly ripe, healthy grapes at Spätlese-level ripeness, even when vinified dry. After a gentle pressing, the must is cool-fermented—often in a combination of stainless steel and large traditional casks—to preserve purity of fruit and site expression. The wine then rests on fine lees to enhance texture and harmony before bottling, resulting in a dry Riesling that is both vibrant and elegantly polished.
Food & Serving
This dry Rheingau Riesling is a versatile food partner, shining alongside classic dishes such as grilled or pan-seared white fish, poached salmon, sushi and sashimi, as well as lighter poultry dishes and veal in delicate sauces. Its juicy fruit and mineral backbone also work beautifully with fine Asian cuisine, particularly dishes with ginger, lemongrass or mild chili heat, and with lightly spiced vegetable or seafood curries. Serve well-chilled but not icy, ideally at 8–10°C (46–50°F), to allow the aromas and texture to unfold. Decanting is not essential, but a brief 20–30 minutes in a carafe or in the glass can help the wine open and show more of its flinty, stony nuance.
