Description
Rita & Rudolf Trossen St. Peter Purus Riesling trocken Bio 2023 is a vibrant, bone-dry Mosel Riesling that captures the purest expression of its steep slate slopes. Crafted from certified organic and biodynamic vineyards, it’s a precise, mineral-driven wine that speaks clearly of place. The “Purus” designation underlines an ultra-minimalist, low‑intervention philosophy, continuing the Trossen family’s legacy as pioneers of natural and organic viticulture in the Mosel.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, this Riesling shows a pale lemon color with shimmering green highlights, reflecting its youth and freshness. The nose is delicately expressive yet focused, offering notes of lime zest, green apple, crunchy pear, and white peach, woven together with wet slate, flint, and subtle herbal hints of lemon balm and wild meadow flowers.
On the palate, the wine is bone‑dry, linear, and precise, with a racy acidity that is beautifully balanced by a fine, crystalline texture. Citrus and green orchard fruits take the lead, joined by grapefruit pith, fresh lime, and a gentle saline edge that extends into a long, mouthwatering, mineral finish. While already highly enjoyable in its youth, this 2023 Riesling has the structure and acidity to evolve gracefully for 5–8 years, gaining complexity, softer edges, and more pronounced smoky, honeyed, and petrol nuances with time in bottle.
Production
Sourced from the steep, slate-rich vineyards around the St. Peter sites in the Mosel-Saar-Ruwer, this Riesling grows on classic blue and grey slate soils that lend the wine its distinctive minerality and tension. The vines are farmed organically and biodynamically, with great emphasis on biodiversity, manual canopy work, and hand harvesting to ensure only perfectly ripe, healthy grapes make it to the cellar. In keeping with the Trossens’ low‑intervention philosophy, the must is gently pressed, fermented spontaneously with native yeasts, and matured in stainless steel or neutral vessels to preserve purity, terroir character, and natural vibrancy, with minimal sulfur and no unnecessary fining or filtration.
Food & Serving
This dry, mineral Mosel Riesling is an outstanding companion to delicately flavored dishes such as sashimi, ceviche, fresh oysters, steamed mussels, and simply grilled white fish. It also pairs beautifully with sushi, light poultry dishes, Vietnamese and Thai cuisine with citrus and herbs, as well as goat’s cheese, young hard cheeses, and seasonal vegetable dishes like asparagus or fennel-based salads. Serve well-chilled at 8–10°C to highlight its freshness and precision; a brief 15–20 minutes in the glass or a small carafe allows the aromas to open up, but extended decanting is not required.
