Description
Château Rieussec 2006 is a classic Premier Cru Sauternes from one of Bordeaux’s most respected sweet wine estates, known for combining richness, precision, and remarkable freshness. Crafted from botrytised grapes in a great noble-rot vintage, it offers the depth and elegance that have made Rieussec one of the benchmark names in Sauternes.
Tasting Notes
The wine typically shows a luminous golden color that deepens with age. On the nose, expect layers of candied citrus, apricot, honey, orange marmalade, saffron, and subtle vanilla notes, with a distinctive lift of freshness that keeps the aromas vivid rather than heavy.
On the palate, Rieussec 2006 is lush and concentrated, with opulent sweetness balanced by bright acidity and a long, refined finish. The wine’s botrytis-driven complexity gives it excellent structure and impressive longevity, and it should continue to age gracefully for many years, developing even more honeyed, nutty, and dried-fruit nuances.
Production
Château Rieussec sits in the Sauternes appellation of Bordeaux, where the cool morning mists from the Ciron and Garonne rivers create ideal conditions for noble rot. Harvesting is done by hand in multiple selective passes to pick only perfectly botrytised berries at peak ripeness, preserving concentration and purity. Vinification is carried out with careful temperature control and aging in oak barrels, which adds texture, complexity, and subtle spice without overpowering the wine’s natural balance.
Food & Serving
Serve slightly chilled, ideally around 8–10°C, to highlight the wine’s freshness and aromatic complexity. It pairs beautifully with foie gras, blue cheeses like Roquefort, fruit tarts, crème brûlée, and desserts featuring apricot, peach, or citrus. Decanting is usually unnecessary, though opening the bottle a short time before serving can help the aromas unfold.
Producer
Château Rieussec is one of the leading estates in Sauternes and was classified as a Premier Cru in the 1855 Bordeaux Classification. Once owned by Carmelite monks and later associated with the prestigious Rothschild family, the estate has long been recognized for producing some of the region’s most expressive and age-worthy sweet wines. Today, Rieussec remains a reference point for traditional Sauternes, admired for its consistency, richness, and finesse.
