Ridge Monte Bello is one of California’s most celebrated red wines, admired for its rare balance of power, finesse, and longevity. First released in 1962, it builds on a winemaking tradition at Monte Bello Vineyard that dates back to 1886 in the Santa Cruz Mountains, making it a true landmark in American wine history.

Tasting Notes
Deep dark ruby in the glass, it opens with an expressive nose of ripe plums, blackberries, espresso, black truffle, anise, crushed stone, and subtle toasted oak. The palate is full-bodied and concentrated, yet remarkably poised, with dark fruit framed by layers of savory complexity and a refined sense of structure. Despite its depth, the wine remains elegant and restrained, carrying its 13.7% alcohol with ease. Still very youthful, it has the pedigree and balance to develop beautifully over many years, gaining further nuance and complexity with bottle age.

Production
Monte Bello Vineyard sits high in the Santa Cruz Mountains, where the cooler mountain climate and elevated terrain help preserve freshness and structure in the grapes. The blend is built primarily on Cabernet Sauvignon, with Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot contributing to the final wine. Winemaker Eric Baugher ages the wine for 17 months in 100% new, air-dried oak barrels to enhance complexity while preserving the vineyard’s natural elegance.

Food & Serving
This is a superb wine for classic, richly flavored dishes such as grilled ribeye, roast lamb, beef Wellington, or braised short ribs. It also pairs beautifully with mature hard cheeses. Serve at around 16–18°C, and consider decanting for at least 1–2 hours if drinking young to allow the wine to open fully.
