Ridge Vineyards Monte Bello is one of California’s most iconic Bordeaux-style blends, admired for its rare combination of power, precision, and grace. First released in 1962, it builds on vineyard history at Monte Bello that dates back to 1886, making it a true reference point for American fine wine.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, Monte Bello 2018 shows a deep, dark ruby color that hints at its concentration. The nose is layered and expressive, with ripe plum, blackberry, espresso, black truffle, anise, crushed stone, and well-integrated oak spice. On the palate, it is full-bodied and intensely flavored, yet remarkably balanced and elegant. Dark fruit leads the way, supported by savory, earthy nuances and fine structure. This is a wine with excellent aging potential and, while already impressive, it is still very young and should develop beautifully over time.

Production
Monte Bello Vineyard in the Santa Cruz Mountains is known for its cool mountain terroir, which gives the wine freshness, structure, and natural elegance. The grapes are carefully harvested, and the wine is vinified as a Bordeaux blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot. It is matured for 17 months in 100% new, air-dried oak barrels, contributing subtle spice and depth without overwhelming the fruit.

Food & Serving
This is a superb match for grilled ribeye, roast lamb, braised short ribs, venison, or truffle-rich dishes. Serve at around 16–18°C. Decanting is recommended, especially in its youth, to allow the wine to open fully and show its layered aromatics and structure.
