Ridge Vineyards Lytton Springs 2016 300CL

Ridge Vineyards’ Lytton Springs is one of California’s benchmark field blends, built around old-vine Zinfandel and supported by Carignan, Mourvèdre, and Petite Sirah for added depth, structure, and spice. First made in 1972, it has become a signature wine for Ridge and a showcase of just how expressive and age-worthy Zinfandel-based blends can be when handled by a top producer.

Tasting Notes
The wine typically shows a deep ruby to inky garnet color, with concentrated dark fruit in the glass. Expect aromas of ripe blackberry, plum, black cherry, pepper, liquorice, and warm spice, layered with savory notes from the supporting varieties. On the palate it is full-bodied and generous, with lush, juicy fruit balanced by firm but polished tannins and lively acidity. The 2016 vintage shows impressive harmony and detail, with plenty of richness now and the structure to develop gracefully over several more years.

Production
Lytton Springs comes from Sonoma County, where old vines and varied soils help produce naturally low yields and concentrated fruit. Ridge works with a classic field-blend approach, selecting the final composition each year to reflect the character of the vintage; in 2016 the blend was 69% Zinfandel, 23% Petite Sirah, 6% Carignan, and 2% Mourvèdre. Fermentation and élevage are carried out with a focus on preserving freshness, complexity, and the vineyard’s distinctive character.

Food & Serving
This is an excellent match for grilled or roasted meats, barbecue, lamb, braised short ribs, and rich dishes with herbs or spice. It also works beautifully with mature cheeses and hearty Mediterranean fare. Serve at around 16–18°C, and consider decanting for 1–2 hours if drinking young to allow the wine to open fully.
