Ridge Vineyards Geyserville 2019

Ridge Vineyards’ Geyserville is one of California’s most iconic Zinfandel-based wines, consistently earning top ratings year after year. First made in 1966, it comes from some of the estate’s oldest vines, with select parcels now reaching up to 130 years of age, giving the wine exceptional depth, character, and historic pedigree.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows a dark ruby color that hints at its concentration and ripeness. The nose is expressive and layered, offering dark cherry, spice, cola, mint, and a subtle earthy undertone. On the palate, rich dark fruit takes the lead, joined by pomegranate, rose petals, cocoa, and a gentle smoky note on the long finish. Despite its power, the wine is remarkably balanced and composed, with plenty of freshness and structure to support graceful aging over the next several years.

Production
Geyserville Vineyard in California’s Sonoma region is home to a remarkable collection of old vines, many planted on well-drained soils that naturally limit yields and concentrate flavor. Ridge Vineyard’s winemaker, Eric Baugher, adjusts the blend slightly from vintage to vintage, though Zinfandel typically makes up around 70%, with Carignan, Petite Sirah, and Alicante Bouschet completing the blend. The wine is aged for 13 months in American oak, with only about 10% new barrels, allowing the purity of the fruit and the complexity of the old vines to remain at the forefront.

Food & Serving
This is a versatile red for hearty dishes such as grilled lamb, barbecued ribs, roasted beef, or rich mushroom-based plates. It also works beautifully with aged cheeses and dishes with a touch of spice. Serve at around 16–18°C, and consider decanting for 30–60 minutes to help the aromas unfold.
