Ridge Vineyards Geyserville 2016 is a classic Sonoma Zinfandel blend that shows just how expressive and layered this grape can become in the right hands. Built on old-vine fruit from one of Ridge’s most historic sites, it combines richness, structure, and freshness in a way that has made Geyserville one of California’s benchmark field blends since 1966.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, it typically shows a deep ruby to garnet color with plenty of vibrancy. The nose is generous and inviting, with ripe red and dark cherries, blackberry, plum compote, and a lift of spice, floral notes, and subtle caramelized accents. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, plush yet focused, with sweet, polished tannins and a lively backbone that keeps the fruit from feeling heavy. The blend of Zinfandel, Carignan, Petite Sirah, and Alicante Bouschet adds complexity and a more complete texture than Zinfandel alone, bringing darker fruit, savory depth, and added grip. The 2016 vintage is approachable now thanks to its open, juicy style, but it should also continue to develop nicely over the next several years, gaining more nuance and spice with bottle age.

Production
Geyserville comes from Alexander Valley in northern Sonoma, where old-vine parcels benefit from a well-suited mix of soils and a warm but balanced climate. The vineyard includes some of Ridge’s oldest Zinfandel plantings, with the famed Old Patch section featuring vines more than 130 years old. Harvesting is done with a focus on preserving fruit character and natural balance, and the wine is vinified as a traditional field blend, with the different varieties fermented together to build complexity and harmony.

This is a versatile red for hearty, flavorful dishes such as grilled lamb, barbecued ribs, roast pork, mushroom ragù, or aged hard cheeses. Serve it at around 16–18°C, and consider decanting for 30–60 minutes if drinking it young, which will help the wine open up and show its full aromatic range.
