Description
Ridge Monte Bello 2016 is one of California’s truly great collectible red wines, a benchmark Cabernet-based blend from the cool, fog-kissed Santa Cruz Mountains. The 2016 vintage is already widely hailed for its poise and classical structure, with critic Antonio Galloni (Vinous) awarding it 98/100 and calling it a ‘don’t miss’ wine. Expect a wine that marries California fruit purity with an Old World sense of restraint, energy, and balance. The unique selling point of Monte Bello is its singular mountain terroir: steep, high-elevation limestone-rich slopes far above Silicon Valley, producing intensely flavored yet remarkably fresh, ageworthy wines. In 2016, lifted aromatics, vibrant acidity and a medium-bodied, finely etched structure give the wine a super-classic, almost claret-like feel. First produced in the early 1960s, Monte Bello has long been a reference point for American Cabernet blends, famously holding its own against top Bordeaux in historic blind tastings, and has since become one of the most revered wines in the United States.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, Ridge Monte Bello 2016 shows a deep, vivid ruby core with a subtle garnet rim, signaling both concentration and finesse. The nose is beautifully lifted and detailed: cool red and black currants, wild blackberry and plum, framed by notes of crushed violets, graphite, cedar, tobacco leaf and a hint of dried herbs and spice from the oak. Everything feels precise and energetic rather than heavy, with a sense of airiness that Galloni describes as “floating” aromas.
On the palate, the 2016 is medium to medium-plus in body, with a spine of bright, clear acidity that carries pure red and dark berry fruit across the tongue. Fine-grained, chalk-dusted tannins give structure without harshness, while flavors of cassis, redcurrant, black cherry, pencil shavings, forest floor and subtle vanilla and baking spice unfold in layers. The balance is exceptional: power and concentration wrapped in elegance and lift. The finish is long, focused and mineral, promising considerable development in bottle. While already captivating with proper aeration, the 2016 has significant aging potential; cellared well, it should evolve beautifully for 20–30 years or more, gaining tertiary complexity of cigar box, leather and truffle.
Production
Monte Bello is sourced from Ridge’s historic estate vineyards high in the Santa Cruz Mountains of California, an unusually cool, maritime-influenced region for top-tier Cabernet-based wines. The vineyards sit at high elevation on rare limestone and decomposed greenstone soils, which naturally limit yields and contribute to the wine’s distinct minerality, firm structure and vibrant acidity. The grapes (a classic Bordeaux-style blend led by Cabernet Sauvignon, with supporting varieties such as Merlot, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc) are typically hand-harvested in small lots at optimal ripeness to preserve freshness and aromatic detail. Ridge is known for a minimalist, terroir-driven philosophy: native-yeast fermentations, careful lot-by-lot vinification, and sensitive use of primarily American oak barrels for aging. Each parcel is evaluated and blended after extensive tasting, resulting in a final cuvée that captures the character of the vintage while remaining unmistakably Monte Bello.
Food & Serving
Ridge Monte Bello 2016 is a natural partner for refined, protein-rich dishes that echo its depth and structure. Think dry-aged ribeye or côte de boeuf, roast leg of lamb with rosemary and garlic, venison or other game birds, or classic dishes like beef Wellington or braised short ribs. It also pairs beautifully with mature, firm cheeses such as aged Comté, Cheddar or Manchego, and with simple dishes that highlight earthy flavors—wild mushrooms, truffle-inflected preparations, or roasted root vegetables. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) in large Bordeaux glasses to allow the aromatics to unfold fully. In its youth, decanting for 2–3 hours is highly recommended to soften the tannins and reveal the wine’s layered bouquet; as it develops with age, a gentle 1-hour decant primarily to remove sediment will suffice.
Producer
Ridge Vineyards is one of California’s most respected and influential producers, with roots on the Monte Bello estate that date back to the 19th century and a modern legacy shaped from the 1960s onward. From its perch in the Santa Cruz Mountains, Ridge helped define what world-class Californian wine could be—combining European sensibility with New World terroir. Monte Bello, in particular, has become a flagship wine for the region and for American Cabernet blends, gaining international recognition in landmark tastings and consistently featuring among the highest-rated wines of its category. Ridge’s commitment to expressing site through thoughtful, minimally interventionist winemaking, along with a strong track record for ageworthy, transparently labeled wines, has secured its place as a cornerstone producer in the USA and a benchmark for mountain-grown, classically styled reds.
