Reyneke, Chenin Blanc 2023

Reyneke Chenin Blanc 2023 is a beautifully expressive South African white that showcases the freshness, concentration, and balance old vines can deliver. Crafted biodynamically, it reflects Johan Reyneke’s belief that the best wines begin with a true sense of place. The fruit comes from some of the estate’s oldest vineyards, planted in 1974 and 1979, giving the wine both depth and authenticity.

Tasting Notes
This Chenin Blanc is likely to present a bright, inviting appearance with a clean, luminous colour and excellent clarity. On the nose, expect layered aromas of fresh orchard fruit, citrus, and subtle floral notes, with a gentle savoury complexity from lees ageing and well-integrated oak. The palate should feel balanced and textured, combining ripe fruit purity with lively acidity and a creamy, rounded mid-palate. The old-vine fruit brings natural concentration, while fermentation in oak and maturation on lees add nuance and depth. It should drink beautifully now, but also has the structure to age gracefully for a few years.

Production
The grapes are grown in Reyneke’s oldest vineyards, planted in 1974 and 1979, where mature vines naturally produce concentrated fruit with excellent balance. The wine is made biodynamically, with the aim of expressing terroir as clearly as possible. After hand harvesting, the grapes are cooled and pressed, then fermented in 300-litre barrels and large foudres. Following fermentation, the wine matures for 10 months on the lees in older oak barrels, adding texture and complexity without overpowering the fruit.

Food & Serving
Reyneke Chenin Blanc 2023 pairs well with grilled fish, roast chicken, creamy seafood dishes, sushi, or lightly spiced Asian cuisine. It can also work beautifully with vegetable dishes and soft, rind-washed cheeses. Serve chilled at around 8–10°C, and decanting is generally not necessary, though a little air may help if you want the aromatics to open up further.
