Description
René Barbier’s Gratallops Vi de Vila Rosat 2023 is a serious, gastronomic rosé from Priorat, offering considerably more depth and structure than a typical summer rosé. With its distinctive orange-pink colour, savoury complexity and extended maturation in oak, it reflects the character of both the historic Clos Mogador estate and the Gratallops village terroir.
Tasting Notes
The wine has a striking orange-toned rosé colour. Its nose leans towards wild herbs, dried flowers, spice and subtle yeasty notes rather than overtly fruity aromas, recalling the traditional clarete style of Ribera del Duero and mature rosés from Rioja.
On the palate, it is powerful, mature and rounded, with a dry, stony character, layered texture and excellent detail. The 14.5% alcohol is balanced by savoury freshness and depth, while the full malolactic fermentation contributes to its supple profile. This is a rosé with genuine ageing potential and should develop further complexity over the coming years.
Production
Produced in Gratallops in the Priorat region of Catalonia, the wine reflects the area’s rugged, mineral-rich llicorella slate soils. The 2023 vintage follows the approach used in previous years: it underwent full malolactic fermentation before ageing for 16 months in a 2,500-litre oak foudre, without racking. Fewer than 3,000 bottles were produced, making it a particularly limited and distinctive expression of Priorat rosé.
Food & Serving
Its dry, structured and savoury profile makes it especially well suited to food, including roast poultry, grilled pork, charcuterie, mature cheeses, mushroom dishes and richly flavoured Mediterranean cuisine. Serve lightly chilled at around 10–12°C rather than ice-cold. Decanting is not essential, but a short decant or generous aeration can help reveal its herbal, floral and spicy complexity, particularly when enjoyed young.
Producer
René Barbier is one of the key figures in the modern revival of Priorat and the founder of Clos Mogador, one of the region’s most respected estates. Based around Gratallops, the estate has played a significant role in establishing Priorat as a source of age-worthy, terroir-driven wines. Clos Mogador’s wines are known for their depth, individuality and close connection to the rugged landscape of Catalonia.
