Réne Barbier Clos Mogador 2020

Clos Mogador 2020 is a benchmark Priorat red from one of Catalonia’s most respected names, offering remarkable depth, energy, and elegance in a challenging vintage. Built on Garnatxa, Carinyena, Syrah, and Cabernet Sauvignon, it combines ripe fruit, herbal nuance, and a distinctive mineral edge that speaks clearly of its historic terroir.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows a deep, concentrated red color with a polished, modern feel. The nose is expressive and layered, with black raspberry purée, bitter cherry, Mediterranean herbs, and a lifted note of spiced orange peel. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, lively, and finely structured, with well-formed tannins that give it real grip without overshadowing the fruit. There is a savory thread of iron and stone through the finish, adding length and a strong sense of place. It is approachable now, but has the structure to develop beautifully through 2033.

Production
Clos Mogador 2020 comes from Priorat in Catalonia, a rugged region known for its steep slopes, poor slate-based soils, and low-yielding vineyards. The 2020 vintage was unusually difficult, with excess rain and mildew pressure, prompting the estate to acquire additional vineyard land to protect production volume. The wine is now aged exclusively in 2,000-liter oak foudres, allowing for gentler oak influence and a more transparent expression of the fruit and terroir.

Food & Serving
This is a versatile wine for richly flavored dishes such as grilled lamb, roasted duck, venison, braised beef, or mushroom-based dishes with herbs and spice. Serve at 16–18°C, and if opened young, decant for 1–2 hours to help the tannins soften and the aromas unfold.
