Description
Rauzan-Ségla 2019 is a beautifully poised Margaux from one of the Médoc’s most admired historic estates. As a 2ème Grand Cru Classé, it combines refined Cabernet-led structure with the elegance and perfume that define the best wines of Margaux.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows a deep ruby core with bright, youthful edges. The nose is layered and precise, opening with blackcurrant, blackberry, violet, cedar, and a subtle graphite note, with time in the glass bringing hints of plum, tobacco, and spice.
The palate is polished and beautifully balanced, with fine tannins, fresh acidity, and a supple core of dark fruit. Cabernet Sauvignon provides structure and longevity, while Merlot adds flesh and generosity; Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot contribute aromatic lift and complexity. This is a wine with excellent aging potential and should develop added nuance over the next 15–25 years, gaining complexity, earthy depth, and softer tannins.
Production
Rauzan-Ségla’s vineyards are situated in the gravelly soils of Margaux, where excellent drainage and the moderating influence of the Gironde help Cabernet Sauvignon ripen slowly and evenly. The 2019 vintage benefited from careful parcel selection and precise vineyard work, with grapes harvested plot by plot to capture optimal ripeness. Winemaking typically focuses on preserving purity, structure, and aromatic finesse, with fermentation and élevage designed to enhance the estate’s signature balance and elegance.
Food & Serving
This wine pairs especially well with roasted lamb, beef tenderloin, duck breast, game birds, and mushroom-based dishes. It also works beautifully with truffle-infused preparations and aged hard cheeses. Serve at 16–18°C, and decant for 1–2 hours if drinking young to allow the aromatics and tannins to open fully.
Producer
Rauzan-Ségla is a historic Margaux estate with roots dating back to the 17th century and is ranked as a Second Growth in the 1855 Bordeaux Classification. Known for its finesse, consistency, and classic Left Bank style, the château has long been regarded as one of the benchmark producers of Margaux. Its reputation has been strengthened in recent decades by meticulous vineyard management and winemaking focused on precision and elegance.
