R. López de Heredia Viña Tondonia Reserva 2007 Magnum is a benchmark Rioja Reserva, released only after exceptionally long aging in both barrel and bottle. Made from grapes grown on the estate’s most important vineyard, Tondonia, it offers the timeless elegance and quiet complexity that have made López de Heredia one of Spain’s most respected traditional producers.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, this Reserva shows a graceful, mature ruby color with the kind of transparency that signals both age and finesse. The nose is wonderfully refined, with ultra-clean red berry fruit lifted by notes of damp forest floor, moss, mushrooms, and a subtle hint of cigar box from extended oak aging. On the palate, the wine is silky and layered, with a creamy texture and beautifully integrated fruit. The red berry core is balanced by savory, earthy nuance and gentle spice, making this a wine of depth rather than power. It is already expressive, but thanks to its structure and long élevage, it can continue to evolve well over time in bottle.

Production
The grapes come from Tondonia, one of the estate’s flagship vineyards in Rioja, where the long-growing, traditional approach favors balance and aromatic complexity over sheer ripeness. The blend is led by Tempranillo, supported by Garnacha, with small portions of Graciano and Mazuelo adding lift, structure, and aromatic detail. After harvest, the wine undergoes extended maturation, spending 6 years in barrel and nearly the same again in bottle before release—far beyond legal minimums and central to the house style.

Food & Serving
This is an excellent match for roasted lamb, slow-cooked beef, game birds, mushrooms, and richly flavored Mediterranean dishes. Serve at around 16–18°C, and consider decanting for 30–60 minutes if opening now, especially if you want the wine to show its full aromatic range and silky texture.
