R. López de Heredia Viña Tondonia Blanco Reserva 2012 is a beautifully traditional white Rioja, made in the classic, long-aged style that has made López de Heredia one of Spain’s most respected names. Crafted from Macabeo (Viura), it stands out for its depth, texture, and oxidative complexity rather than simple youthful freshness.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows a deep golden hue that hints at its extended ageing. The nose is layered and distinctive, with aromas of dried fruit, toasted nuts, honey, and subtle oxidative notes, all woven together in a very elegant, old-school Rioja profile. On the palate, the wine is dry, full-bodied, and beautifully balanced by lively acidity. Flavours of ripe apple, almond, spice, and gentle oak unfold into a long, persistent finish. This is a white wine with serious ageing potential, and it will continue to develop additional complexity over time.

Production
Made entirely from Macabeo, the wine comes from old-vine vineyards in Rioja and is produced according to López de Heredia’s traditional methods. It spends four years ageing in old American oak barrels before further bottle maturation, a process that shapes its signature texture, aromatic complexity, and lightly oxidative character.

This is a versatile food wine that works especially well with fish, shellfish, roasted poultry, and mature cheeses. Serve it slightly chilled, around 10–12°C, and consider decanting briefly if you want the aromatics to open up more fully.
