Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2021 Nacional is deep, almost opaque purple with a vivid, youthful rim that hints at its long life ahead. The nose is wonderfully expressive yet precise: dark forest fruits, blackberry and black cherry are wrapped in notes of violets, crushed rock, cocoa, and exotic spice, with a lifted, floral character that feels very classically Noval. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied and concentrated, but never heavy. Layers of ripe black fruit, plum and cassis unfold alongside notes of liquorice, dark chocolate, dried orange peel and fine spice. The tannins are very long, ultra-fine and tightly woven, providing both structure and elegance rather than aggression. There is a striking sense of energy and freshness, with a long, pure, beautifully balanced finish that already shows great harmony. While surprisingly approachable in its exuberant youth, this 2021 Nacional is built for decades of evolution in the cellar and has outstanding aging potential.

Production
Quinta do Noval Vintage Port Nacional comes from a tiny, historic vineyard within the Noval estate in the heart of the Douro, planted on steep, schistous terraces at varying altitudes. Crucially, these vines are ungrafted—planted on their own roots—making the Nacional plot something unique in the region, with an inimitable expression of its terroir. The field blend is dominated by classic Douro varieties such as Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz and others, co-planted and harvested by hand at optimal ripeness. After rigorous selection in the vineyard and at the cellar door, the grapes are traditionally foot-trodden in stone lagares to extract color, flavor and tannin gently but thoroughly. Fermentation is stopped by the addition of high-quality grape spirit, preserving the natural sweetness and aromatics, and the young Port is then aged in seasoned wooden vats before being bottled unfiltered as a Vintage Port in very limited quantities.

Food & Serving
While a wine of this stature is often enjoyed on its own, the 2021 Nacional pairs superbly with dark chocolate desserts, dishes featuring black fruits, blue cheeses such as Stilton or Roquefort, and well-aged hard cheeses like farmhouse Cheddar or Serra da Estrela. For the best experience, serve slightly cool at around 16–18°C (60–64°F). Decanting is strongly recommended, both to allow the young wine to open aromatically and, in the decades to come, to separate it from natural sediment. In its youth, give it several hours in a decanter for maximum expression; as it matures, a gentle decant shortly before serving will be sufficient.

Quinta do Noval is one of the Douro Valley’s most historic and revered estates, with records of wine production dating back to the early 18th century. Based in the Cima Corgo, Noval helped shape the identity of modern Port, not least by being one of the first to declare a vintage from a single estate.
