Description
Quinta de Azevedo Honra 2022 is an expressive, oak-aged white from Portugal’s Minho region, combining the estate’s signature freshness with impressive depth and texture. Its long maturation in French oak and subsequent bottle ageing give it a level of complexity that sets it apart from lighter, more immediate styles of Vinho Regional Minho. The wine reflects Quinta de Azevedo’s established tradition of crafting refined whites with both freshness and ageing potential.
Tasting Notes
The wine shows a clear yellow-green colour. Its nose is notably complex, unfolding in layers: mineral and stony notes mingle with exotic fruit, while dried-fruit and honeyed aromas add richness. Subtle spice from the extended oak ageing is well integrated rather than dominant.
On the palate, it is intense, persistent and beautifully balanced. The finish is enveloping and creamy, supported throughout by the characteristic freshness associated with Quinta de Azevedo. Its combination of acidity, concentration and carefully integrated oak should allow it to develop further in bottle over the next few years, gaining additional savoury and tertiary complexity.
Production
The grapes are hand-harvested and transported immediately to a cool room, helping to minimise oxidation and preserve their aromas. After chilling, they are gently pressed at low temperature, with only the free-run juice used. The must undergoes cold, static settling for three to five days before fermentation at a controlled 14–16°C for 21 days. The two grape varieties are then matured separately for eight months in 500-litre French oak barrels, sourced from both first- and second-year stock. The final blend spends a further eight months in 1,200-litre oak vessels, remaining on fine lees throughout the 16-month maturation period, followed by 14 months of bottle ageing.
Food & Serving
Its creamy texture and pronounced freshness make it a particularly good partner for pâté, rich fish dishes and strongly flavoured red meats. It also works well with mature, full-bodied cheeses. Serve lightly chilled at around 10–12°C. Decanting is not essential, but allowing the wine to breathe in a glass or briefly in a small carafe can help reveal its layered aromas, especially when served young.
Producer
Quinta de Azevedo is a respected estate in Portugal’s Minho region, a part of the country renowned for vibrant, fresh white wines. The producer’s style combines the region’s natural acidity with careful cellar work and oak maturation, as demonstrated by this Honra bottling. Its extended ageing on fine lees and in French oak highlights the estate’s focus on producing more structured, gastronomic whites with the capacity to evolve in bottle.
